Changing router admin password

I've just installed my new XB8 router. I cannot gain admin access to it. The article  at https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/change-wifi-mode-admin-tool-xfinity-xfi instructions are to access 10.0.0.1, use the password 'admin', and the default password on the base of the router.  When I do the router responds with an invalid username/password message.

I've also tried:

  • resetting the router
  • using the password 'password'
  • accessing the router through a direct cabled connection to the router as well as via wi-fi

From the forums, this appears to be a common problem but I can't find the solution. Please advise

A quick follow up. I can confirm the password on the router base does work. It just helps if you read it properly - even if you've read it wrong 5 time prior. Sixth recheck must be the charm.

@daddycolt

You'll need to hard reset the device back to factory defaults by pressing and holding in the recessed reset button on the rear (or use the WPS button if it doesn't have a reset button hole) for 30 seconds. The user name and the password will now become the defaults of admin and password, or it's the password that's written on the label on the bottom or back of the device. As an FYI, you will lose any customized settings, and they will need to be re-configured from scratch.

They recently updated the gateway's firmware. You have to turn on admin access in the app now;

Open the Xfinity App. (You'll need a working connection for this step).

Go to the WiFi tab.

Select View WiFi equipment and open Advanced Settings.

Select Admin Tool online access.

Slide the toggle button to Allow Admin Tool access (ON).

Select Save.

After that, you should be able to navigate to http://10.0.0.1
