Changing DNS settings

Hi dear Xfinity people, I would like to be able to change my DNS settings without adding additional hardware and hooking up another router to my network, I do not understand why this option is locked down for customers that have the know-how, I think this option should at least be available on the gateway admin panel.

Hi, thanks for responding, I saw this already and have done the googling for it.

My question is why is this a thing? why not let us control our own DNS without getting additional hardware, I do not want to clump up my space or spend more money for it.

I would like a reasonable explanation for it, since I do not like relaying on a DNS that I do not trust

SpicyMayo Thanks for posting on our Community Forums and for your feedback on this matter. To ensure best-in-class service and to optimize our customers’ Xfinity Internet experience, we regularly enhance the capabilities of the Xfinity Gateway by updating the software running on them — one of the many benefits of renting an Xfinity Gateway.

One enhancement is WiFi Intelligence (also referred to as enabling the Mesh agent on the Gateway), an advanced WiFi technology feature that automatically adjusts WiFi settings to optimize the WiFi experience.

This is the reason why our newer gateways are unable to manage the advanced features through the admin tool. You can still access the advanced features on our Xfinity App. For more information, you can visit us HERE. I hope this helps.

@SpicyMayo You cannot change it because they own your modem and control it's settings.  If you want complete control of your WAN settings, your only option is to buy and activate a compatible, approved third party modem or modem/router combo.

@XfinityDilary Hi you still did not give me an answer on WHY I can not change the DNS on my router...........

Secondly the extender is horrible, I only get 40 MB/PS on it from my phone and 200 MB/PS on my laptop, mind you both my phone and my laptop support WIFI 6.

In addition to that in the link you sent I can just view the DNS? not edit it??? why??

@XfinityDilary The OP was not asking about his LAN settings.  He is asking about changing the DNS settings on the WAN side.

... I do not understand why this option is locked down ...

Because they find it useful to know what sites their users are visiting, and locking their gateways into their DNS servers gives them that. I doubt they'll be giving it up any time soon.
