Can't access some websites

It's happening again!

I see other people with this problem so I know I am not alone here.

Using different computers and different browsers all give the same error message no help.

Restart modem, check IP, it's not blacklisted, all computers malware checked.

Everything worked fine yesterday get up this morning and can't access these websites.

Switch to T-mobile Hotspot and connect computer and everything is fine.

Maybe I should switch to their internet service. Please help

The problem seems to have gone away a little bit at a time. I still have the same IP address and it still seems to be blacklisted but

every day or so last week I was able to get back on a couple of the problem websites daily. First it was Citizens bank and Fidelity, then

Guitar center and American Airlines, Costco, DSW, etc until I am now able to access them all. I don't know how or why just glad it's working again.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Check to make sure that your proxy settings are correct.

You don't have permission to access "[hostname]" on this server.

All three of these sites are located on Akamai's network. See https://community.akamai.com/customers/s/article/Why-is-Akamai-blocking-me?language=en_US (thanks to @Hemingray42 for finding that page).

"Access Denied / You don't have permission" messages are issued by the destination site, not by Comcast. It's likely the sites are blocking your public Comcast IP. You can look up your IP at https://www.google.com/search?q=my+IP.

It would be a good idea to scan your systems for malware. A person or a program using your Internet service is doing something these Akamai customers don't like.

You'll probably need to ask the sites' admins for help with this.

@BruceW You will actually need to contact Akamai directly to have your IP delisted.

The reason why you have access problem on certain website is because your public IP address has been blacklisted in some anti-spam database.

You can confirm that your public IP address has been blacklisted from to this site but you will need to know your public IP address (see next paragraph to find your public IP address)

 https://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

Your public IP address is assigned by your internet service provider, which is Xfinity in this case.  You can find your public IP address in your router setting.  Or you can find your public IP address from https://www.google.com/search?q=my+IP

If you click on one of the blacklisted sites from the above website, you'll find out why you have been blacklisted.

In my case, my public IP address was blacklisted for not having rDNS which stands for reverse DNS.

This reverse DNS should be assigned by the internet service provider, which in this case is Xfinity.

I called Xfinity and all they told me  was to change my modem to Xfinity's. If I change my modem it would work since I would get a new public IP address.

Also if you wait long enough, this problem resolves by itself because Xfinity will periodically change your public IP address. This is the reason why it seemingly seems to repair by itself if you wait long enough. But I could not get an answer from Xfinity exactly when my public IP address would change.

You can also change your router and you will also end up with a  new public IP address.

I've had this recurring  problem a few years ago and I just had it again last week.  Since I cannot get help from Xfinity, I just end up swapping routers back and forth every time I have this problem.

Yes, Xfinity should solve this problem but they won't. Maybe they're trying to sell modem so they can make more money.

If your public IP address has not been blacklisted for not having reverse DNS, you may have a bigger problem.

Good luck

The link you posted says:

Akamai does not block users from accessing our customers’ websites. ... If you are unable to access a web site, this may be the result of a policy configured by the site owner you are attempting to access. To make a change to this policy, the site owner (the Akamai customer) would have to change their policy. Akamai is unable to make this change without the explicit direction of the site owner.

@BruceW Good catch. It was early AM when I thought of that. What's odd is it affects multiple sites at once.

Doing more research I found my IP address has been blacklisted by Sorbs.

This IP address was assigned to me by Comcast when I installed my new modem last week.

This new modem was purchased by me and not rented from Comcast.

Went through the process of getting my IP removed from Sorbs website with no success and was directed back to Comcast.

Spent most of last night on the phone with Comcast trying to get assigned a new IP address for my modem.

So my question is why is Comcast assigning blacklisted IP addresses to new modems?

I suspect I would not be having this problem If I rented my modem from Comcast.

@user_d7ce61 If you have your own router, perform these steps:

1. Go into your router's configuration interface, and change the WAN MAC address. (Some will give you a quick option to clone your PC's mac).

2. Power cycle the modem (This will clear the MAC table)

3. Go to a website such as ipchicken.com and check your IP. If done right, your IP will have changed.

They won't do it. If you have a rental gateway you'd have to:

  • swap out it for another, or
  • place it in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace it with a customer-owned modem and router

If you are already using your own modem and router or you've added a router to a rental gateway in bridge mode, just use the router's "clone MAC" facility, and then reboot the modem.

A VPN is another possibility. If you use one your public IP won't actually change, but systems you connect to will see the IP provided by the VPN rather than your actual public IP.
