Can I use NordVPN directly on our third-party modem Motorola MB8611 and with Eero 6e router?

Hi there,

Our configuration:

Xfinity 1200 Plan

Modem: Motorola MB8611

Router: Eero 6e

Is it possible to install NordVPN directly on the modem so that our entire network is secure? We have a lot of smart home devices connected, and several Apple devices.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, but I believe it is a little more complicated than that.

NordVPN can't be installed on the Motorola MB8611 to start with. Neither can it be installed on Eero. I found on the web some posts about using OpenWRT, but the Motorola doesn't work with it. Is there a modem that works both on Xfinity AND with OpenWRT? And will it work with my eero system? I can change the modem, but not the eero devices, I have too many of them!

Thanks!

Not just the 8611. It can't be installed on any straight / plain vanilla cable modem / layer 2 bridge. It can only be installed on some routers.

Okay, I get that, my mistake. So assuming that there is nothing I can do at the modem level, that I'm using eero as my gateway/router, AND that I need to keep my 1.5 Gbps signal, is there a trick to make eero work with NordVPN?

Apparently not, and I'm not familiar with the options that are stated here: https://support.nordvpn.com/hc/en-us/articles/20379585675793-Which-routers-don-t-support-NordVPN

Any advice?

@user_7w3t1b Did you see this in the article that I linked too ?

How do I know if my router is VPN compatible?

Before you go further, it’s important to make sure that you have as supported router that’s compatible with a VPN. Not all routers are.

To find out more about compatibility, check the manual that may have come with your router. If you didn’t receive any manual, or if you’ve misplaced it, you should be able to find the information you need online. Just search for the name of your router and “VPN compatibility”.

PRO TIP: If you’re buying a new router, it’s also a good idea to make sure it’s VPN compatible before you purchase it. There are plenty of excellent home VPN routers on the market.

It is worth noting that most ISP routers and modems don’t support a VPN connection. However, you can combine an ISP modem with a VPN-supported router for a VPN to work.

If you’re looking for a VPN-supported router, here are a few suggestions that will benefit both home users and SMEs:

  • Linksys WRT 3200 ACM
  • Asus RT-AC86U
  • Teltonika RUTX11
  • Netgear Nighthawk X10 AD7200

Hey guys,

thanks for your inputs! I did quite a lot of research until I came across this video on Youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUzSsX4T4WQ

This (crazy-coffee-fulled) guy explains how to insert a firewall hardware device between your modem and your router, allowing you to install any OpenVPN-compliant VPN (including NordVPN) on it.

I ended up ordering the Protectli Vault FW4C directly from Protectli. It supports up to 2.5 Gbps traffic and allows a lot of fine-tuning using open-source software to protect my network and guarantee my bandwidth.

I hope this is going to work! I will keep you posted in case you are interested ;-)

Thanks!
