Can I use a wifi cable modem without the router part being active?
I can have a used Arris surfboard SVG248AC for cheap.
My current setup all owned by me: semi- slow Arris modem, Asus router, all humming nicely.
Could I use the SVG248AC above in modem-only mode, and would Comcrat allow?

"SVG248AC" does not appear to be a valid model number. If you meant "SVG2482AC" then Comcast/Xfinity rates the device for use with plan speeds "Up to 857 Mbps" (follow the "See all modems" link on https://www.xfinity.com/support/internet/customerowned and then the "Compatible Modems" Arris list.). Using a gateway device like this as a modem only is called "bridge mode". See https://arris.my.salesforce-sites.com/consumers/articles/Knowledge/SVG2482AC-Bridge-Mode-Setup/. AFAIK the company does not restrict the use of bridge mode.

Greetings, @BigPoodle! I hope your week has been treating you well. Thanks so much for taking a moment out of your busy day to leave a post on our community forum about this modem. You have definitely come to the right place for assistance.
As @BruceW mentioned, you can definitely use your modem in bridge mode, if you want to run a separate router. The SVG2482AC is a Docsis 3.0 modem, so it may not be ideal for download speeds above 800 Mbps, but it should be fine for everything else. Please let us know if we can be of assistance.
