Can a Arris Modem Get Too Old and Not Function Correctly?
Over the last two days the internet connection at our home has been terrible with constant dropping of the signal and my restarting the modem only to have it happen again. I called Customer Service (after nearly an hour waiting on the cell phone) to be told no one from Comcast/Xfinity will come into our home due to the pandemic, but someone will check outside equipment/wires/whatever some day soon. I asked about a new modem even though ours supposedly is compatible (Arris TG1682G). First the outside check will be done over a new modem. However, I've noticed the internet connection is more stable with the 5 over the 2.4 so I wondered if the 2.4 line on the modem is "dead." Just wondering what is causing this dropping of the internet signal--especially since our daughter is working from home and needs the internet stable to do her job!

Any chance you're in the SF Bay area? There seem to be more than a few reports of intermittent network outages around here.

For a test, does a computer hardwired directly to the router / gateway device with an ethernet cable have the same problem ?
With this test, we are trying to isolate this from being either a WiFi-only problem or a problem with the general connection to the Comcast system which would of course affect both. It's a good first step of troubleshooting before we proceed any further.

No, I'm in the area just north of Nashville, Tennessee. (Sadly, I've never been west of St. Louis, Missouri but would love to visit your area someday.)

Will test that out in a little while (have an appointment I have to get to this morning). I did find out last night that the lower band width of 2.4 is the one having more dropping of the signal while the 5 band width is working fairly well. Now I don't know if that means the problem is in the modem or in the wiring. I haven't heard from anyone who has checked outside and sure wish when he/she does come that I could at least talk to them from six feet or more away!
