Best way to monitor connectivity health from a router

My cable modem is in bridged mode with a router behind the cable modem. The connectivity is working as expected, and everything looks good. I am working on my WAN failover, WAN1 for my cable modem and WAN2 for my cellular connection. ICMP is not responding on the assigned gateway, which is expected. It is possible to run the same test on a different IP address, but I would like to not test the connectivity to a public server (E.G. 8.8.8.8) for several reasons. It would be best to do this against Xfinitiy's infrastructure. I have considered running the test to [Gateway Address + 1], but I am unsure what equipment that would be - but it responds. I thought it would be best to ask if there is a recommended way to check the WAN1 connectivity so my router can automatically failover to WAN2?

Hi, @user_f8je42e,

Thank you for reaching out and creating a new post. I'm glad to hear your network has been working as expected. I understand, however, that you have questions about your network. We can provide general troubleshooting steps, however, this would be a bit outside our demarcation. I don't have any specific recommendation to provide this request to be upfront.

Not a problem at all. Doesn't hurt to ask and see what comes up. A manual failover for my situation isn't bad, but I will keep an eye out for other solutions too.

When you look at the output of a traceroute to say 'google.com'. are you saying that the first Comcast hop right after your router is not returning ICMP packet-based ping probes ?

The first hop that is owned by Comcast responds to ICMP, and I can use that in the interim. However, there are a few other questions that come to mind when using the other server. That server is not in my state, and there is another hop between my cable modem and the next Comcast server. I am not sure of the likelihood of the gateway or the server rerouting traffic to a different IP address. E.G. Service being done on the line, I would need to manually update the IP that is being monitored. It seems unlikely, but worth asking since it is an unknown. Any comments or suggestions? Also, are there other ways to check for connectivity outside of ICMP? E.G. Change my router to use HTTP Get to a service on the gateway or the first hop outside my cable modem, similar to SaaS companies.
