ARRIS SBG8300 shows low upstream signal strength....Either of 2.4GHZ or 5 GHZ wifi tends to stop

I just got ARRIS SBG8300 about 25 days ago. We have been having regular issues with either of 2.4GHZ or 5 GHZ wifi stops working but the wired network and other wifi signal is fine. Reboot fixes the issue, but we work from home and my kid is taking online college lessons. We cannot afford to reboot the darn modem everyday. Xfinity support had me change the channel for 2.4 to 6 and 5GHZ to 149. But that did not stop the issue from happening today.

Until today, the downstream and upstream signal strengths used to be good, but today the downstream signal strength dropped to 37 avg. ARRIS support was almost ready to give me replacement modem but they saw the darn upstream signal strength low and said it is Xfinity issue. I have been with Xfinity for 25 days and already fed up.

I have the same issues. Xfinity is horrid. And like you, I work from home. The next time I buy a house, it will be based on which ISPs are available.

Your mixing up downstream and upstream. 37 on upstream is still within Comcast spec. Post all your levels and logs. Your using your own modem/router, if the WiFi stops working that’s the router. You posted that hardwired works fine, so that points to the router

Same issue here and Arris is telling me that the Upstream Power Level is out of spec and will not support a stable connection.  I have only had one instance that I lost both wired and wireless connectivity.  My issue is WiFi.  If wired continues to function and wireless is not funcitoning,  that points to the Gateway to me.

Arris specs for the SBG8300:

https://arris.secure.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SBG8300-Cable-Signal-Levels/?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle

My current levels for Upstream Power:

Power Level (dBmV)

40.000000
35.020599
36.520599
38.020599
38.020599

I should be at 45 - 55 on my Upstream Power according to Arris.

Comcast says they are within their spec for Upstream Power and adjusting those levels will result in worse Downstream numbers and that it is a delicate balance.  My downstream power levels look great against all specs, both Arris and Comcast.

If Comcast supports this SBG8300 Gateway, then I would think Comcast would have to abide by the Arris specs OR not approve the SBG8300 for service on their network.  Not sure what options I have at this point but absolutely DREAD calling either of these guys again.  Has anyone found a solution?  Does anyone have a signal that meets Arris specs?

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Scott

You didn’t say what the downstream is. The only specs that matter are Comcast’s range. And yes if you have no problems wired and problems wireless, it’s going to be the device, distance or wireless interference. Have you changed the wireless channel its broadcasting on. Comcast can only go so far troubleshooting as it’s not their device.
