Apartment Internet vs Xfinity

My apartment building offers internet but it’s slow and slower when more devices are on.

if I get a service like xfinity, would my internet be just as slow or faster? Even though it would be the same Ethernet port?

how would this work? Do they just unlock a portion of the satellite for me that makes it faster?

You are going to have to check with your Landlord/Apartment management company to see what your options are.  Xfinity is going to require either a coax cable or fiber optic cable (if available in your market) be installed into your apartment unit.  Drilling holes in the structure is likely not allowed, or controlled by property management if your unit is not currently wired with coax and only has an Ethernet jack.

Other companies may offer cellular internet services in your area that might work out, and you wouldn't have to drill holes in anything as another option.

@flatlander3 if xfinity does offer service to my building, can I assume that they have a coax or fiber optic cable installed to the same ethernet port?

@user_009b46  No.  It won't use the existing Ethernet port.   Sounds like your building is already wired for internet distribution from a central location with equipment the building controls.

If even possible, they would have to pull RG6 cable through the walls to your unit and install a coax cable jack if the infrastructure does not exist.  If they have a contract with a current Internet provider (common in apartments and even town house developments), it might not be possible either -- agreement violation.

If it's possible, then you would then need to either rent or purchase a 3rd party gateway/modem that would go IN your unit, to covert the RG6 to Ethernet.  You would control that device in your apartment, and not the building.

DSL may be an option too if you have existing telephone POTS lines in your unit == plain ole telephone.  That may, or may not be faster than what you have now, although the bandwidth/service you get on DSL will be more consistent.  Satellite services like StarLink require a pretty wide field view of the sky, so that probably won't work out trying to lock low orbit flying birds from a window.   If you can get a strong 5G signal with a phone in your apartment, cellular internet service may be an option too.

In any case, check with the landlord/property manager to see what the options are.  Their building, their rules.

Hey there, @user_009b46@flatlander3 Is spot on with their great information they provided regarding getting services with Xfinity set up in any kind of apartment complex. It all boils down to the owner of the building and what service providers they allow to be installed.

If you've checked with your apartment's management, and they allow Xfinity services to be installed we would use our own lines to provide your apartment service. Typically, you get one of our awesome Xfinity Wireless Gateways that would provide you the ethernet ports to connect your devices along with providing access via Wi-Fi. You can get service setup here, you just need to input your address to get started!
