Advice on router placement

I am building a new home and the electrician is asking where to install the cat 5 or cat 6 cable to connect to the new router.  Where is the best place for that?  Do I need a tech to come out to the site and evaluate? Thank you.

Hi there user_4m3vrr, thanks for reaching out over our community forums! The modem in your home would connect to a coax outlet (in most cases) and your router would typically be nearby to connect to it. Without having all the details, I'd advise having the router located in any room of your choice that has a coax outlet installed.

Please let us know if you have more questions or further details about the build that might provide more insight!

Thank you. So far there are no coax cables installed. The electrician feels we can save a lot only putting Cat 5 cables where the router will be. We just don’t know where the best placement would be. It’s a two story house and some opinions are to place it on the first floor to cover the second floor

If you're going to be running ethernet cable throughout the home, it would be best to have the router located in a central location. As to which floor, that would 100% be based on your preference or what will be going in the center most rooms on the first or second floor. For example, if the most central location on the bottom floor is planned to be a bathroom or kitchen, it might be best to have the router on the second floor or vice versa.

Thank you - we are not planning to run ethernet cable everywhere.  My understanding is that there is no longer a need for that as everything is wireless!  We can really choose the one spot to add the cable and plug the router in there.  But where is the best spot?

For the best results you will want the modem placed in a central location on the main floor, depending on the floor plan the outlet should be on the outside wall in a central spot. When placing the modem the best places:

  • Central Location: Find the middle of your home to cover all areas evenly.
  • Elevated & Open: Place it on a shelf or table, not on the floor or hidden in a closet, for better signal spread.
  • Away from Interference: Keep it far from microwaves, cordless phones, Bluetooth speakers, large mirrors, and metal items.
  • Main Floor: Avoid attics or basements; the main level is best for multi-story homes.
  • Upright: Ensure it stands vertically with clear ventilation.

FWIW, have the electrician use cat6. Cat5 is outdated.
