Advanced security and other questions.

So, today had to upgrade my Xfinity modem/router. Which I had in bridge mode and wi-fi disabled, and just used my router. What they replaced it with was the Xfi white cube one. Had to use the app to activate it, went pretty smooth. I was looking to set it up the same as the old one in bridge mode since I have my own Wi-Fi router. While connect to the Xfinity modem/router Wi-Fi I found no bridge mode setting in the app or the modems interface. So, I plugged in my router and it works great with out bridge mode. Now I have 2 Wi-Fi connected devices. My router and the Xfi modem/router.

Now, as long ago before on here about Xfinity`s Advanced security, I take it`s still not worth activating?

FWIW. If you are hanging a stand-alone / separate router off of the gateway device, and the gateway is not in *bridge mode*, you are cascading 2 routing devices which will result in an undesirable "double NAT" condition on your home network.

Google "double NAT" for info about its potential pitfalls. It may break some applications.

@EG I guess what I really need to ask is, since my ASUS RT N66R router is almost 10 years old. Should I buy a new router or use Xfinity`s modem/Wi-Fi-router and chunk mine? Seems to have a good signal. And it looks like its dual band 2.4/5.0 work as one.

Why rent their combo device at all when you are only using part of it ? Consider purchasing a compatible straight cable modem at retail to use with a good stand-alone router and save the rental fee. It will pay for itself in fairly short order.

@EG I put the modem in bridge mode, and now it`s all as was before. I can see your point on owning it all, but one time we had lightning strike a tree out front and only fried the modem. Got it replaced for free.

Still confused on their modem/Wi-Fi router.  You have to log into the modem itself to add mac address filters. Didn't see that option on their app. So now I`ll just keep theirs in bridge mode with my old router. I wonder if my older router is slowing me down any?

Do a hardwired (not WiFi) speed test with the router in the mix and then do another test hardwired directly to their gateway and compare the results. A ten-year-old router is a bit long in the tooth, but it also depends on which speed tier you are subscribed to.
