699 hours of hotspot use?

Hello everyone,

I noticed something strange when I opened my Xfinity app on my Samsung phone the other day. There was an info tile saying 'You enjoyed about 699 hours of WiFi hotspots this month'. If you're wondering there are 720 hours in a 30-day month.

I work from home full time, my wife works from home almost full time, and my kids don't have cell phones. At home, our phone, tablets, computers, etc. all connect to Wifi through our router. So how is it possible that we used nearly 700 hours of Wifi hotspots? Is that just what Xfinity calls their router or should I be worried that someone is accessing my WiFi without my knowledge? My WiFi is password protected.

Thanks for the input.

Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. I understand your concern about the unusual WiFi hotspot usage reported by your Xfinity app. Let's dive into this and see if we can clarify things for you.

First, it's great to hear that your WiFi is password protected, which is an essential step in securing your network. Here are a few points to consider regarding the reported hotspot usage:

  1. Xfinity Hotspots: Xfinity has millions of WiFi hotspots nationwide. These hotspots are separate from your home WiFi network and are typically used when you're away from home. If your devices automatically connect to these hotspots when you're out and about, it could contribute to the reported usage.

  2. Home Network vs. Hotspots: The Xfinity app might be counting the time your devices are connected to any Xfinity WiFi network, including both your home network and public hotspots. This could explain the high usage hours.

  3. Device Connections: Check if any of your devices are set to automatically connect to Xfinity hotspots. Sometimes, devices can connect to nearby hotspots even when you're at home, especially if the signal from the hotspot is stronger than your home network.

  4. Unauthorized Access: While your network is password protected, it's always good to ensure that your password is strong and unique. You can also check your router's connected devices list to see if there are any unfamiliar devices connected to your network.

  5. App Settings: Review the settings in your Xfinity app to see if there's an option to differentiate between home network usage and hotspot usage. This might give you a clearer picture of where the reported hours are coming from.

If you're still concerned about unauthorized access, you might consider changing your WiFi password and enabling additional security features like WPA3 encryption, if supported by your router.

I hope this helps clarify the situation! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. We're here to ensure you have a smooth and secure internet experience.
