5Ghz network on Arris Router no longer available

Starting about 7:30am EDT on May 26, 2025, my ARRIS SBG6700-AC stopped showing the 5Ghz network that had been working for years.

I had previously set up both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks, and I could now only see the 2.4Ghz one.  AND, the firmware on the device no longer allows me to set up both networks.

What has happened?  Xfinity controls the firmware on these devices now.

Have you first tried power-cycling / re-starting the device by unplugging it for a minute ? Still no joy ? Try hard resetting the device to factory defaults by pressing and holding in the recessed reset button on the rear (or use the WPS button if it doesn't have a reset button hole) for 30 seconds. This can sometimes clear up some weird behavior issues. You will lose any customized settings, and they will need to be re-configured from scratch if you do the latter.

Good luck !

I have power-cycled.  No change.  The s/w on the device seems to have been changed, as I no longer have option to set up both 2.4 and 5ghz networks with separate names.  And it no longer lets me set the 5Ghz band either.  I may try the factory reset as you suggest, but I'm on support call right now to see what they've done.

Good luck with that... Phone reps are not likely to know anything about firmware. And they'll likely tell you that third-party devices are not supported, and to contact the manufacturer.

@EG it's been going on a while. The issue with self-owned h/w is that Xfinity controls the firmware on it. They seem unwilling to let me know if the s/w was updated, crippling my hardware.

For the Halibut, have you tried the factory reset yet ? It may be futile....

Tried the factory reset.  It did reset everything, as expected, but still the same/new UI that only allows a single network to be defined.  And I cannot select/force the 5Ghz network.  The radio dialog switch (with 2.4 and 5 Ghz options) remains on 2.4 Ghz.

I'll acquire a newer modem and see if the modem is really failing, and somehow that affects the UI displayed.

Sorry. Oh well.... I've seen plenty of this here.... Don't get another combo modem / router gateway device ! Get a plain vanilla / straight cable modem and a stand-alone router unit. They won't be able to control the settings or change the firmware of a separate router. Good luck !

@EG I got an ARRIS again, and it seems to be working fine. Weird. I wonder if the old one did in fact have a problem, and the UI adjusted for that, not allowing me to set up a 5Ghz network.

Who knows, but don't hold your breath. Does it have the same version of firmware ? If it's the same prior version, when it gets updated by the system, the same thing may happen. Shouldn't have gotten another combo gateway, and for many other reasons as well. Good luck !
