2.4 printer will not connect to XB8

1) printer worked fine on ATT until I moved to Xfinity

2) I split the bands,

3) SSID's are different for 2.4 and 6ghz band

4) Passwords are different for each SSID

5) I cleared old network setting from HP5100 - it's a 2.4 radio only

6) ioT's lose connection  a) thermostat first  b) door lock

7) I turned of the advanced security, made no difference, turned it back on

8) XB8 sticker with SSID/Password is not correct for this refurbished modem/router

9) Speed nowhere approaches the 1000gb, but I understand on wifi

10)  Xfinity tech support told me to buy a new printer

I am a retired network/security operator.  What is up with Xfinity, you have made it useless for anyone knowing anything about modem/routers

IF I buy my own modem/router combo, will it work with Xfinity if I give you the MAC address.  DOCSIS 3.1 is correct for Xfinity, right?  I just want to setup my peripherals and use the internet.  If you need support help, I will be glad to work for you guys at my home.  Support was dismal, apparently I never reached higher up support than the person who told me to just buy a new printer, and I just bit my tongue.  I gave them all the information here.

This sounds suspiciously similar to a problem I have with an older WiFi adapter one of my PCs connecting but not getting an IP address assigned.   My thought is that the Channel Mode on the 2.4 GHz network needs to be set to b/g/n but alas, we no longer have access to that control on the Xb8.  For better or worse, Xfinity is now managing that setting 'automatically'.

If your printer has an ethernet port, you might try a wireless bridge or you could add on an Wireless Access Point you configure yourself. It should be cheaper than a new printer or buying your own modem & router.

Or you could just buy another wireless router that supports your printer's WiFi interface (and where you can adjust the settings).  You can turn off the WiFi and DHCP functions on the XB8 and just use it as a modem/firewall.

If you go the own my modem path (which my daughter did) I don't recall having to give them the MAC address during setup which was fairly simple.   It's not just the DOCSIS standard that matters, you'll want to pick a modem that matches your plan's speed.   I believe you can get a list of compatible modems for your plan on the Xfinity support page.

Again my suspicion is that you'll need to tweak the 2.4GHz network on whatever router or access point you buy or you'll end up back where you are today.
