1.2Gbps plan with 1000Mbps speed

As a Gold member, I was suggested to upgrade my Internet plan from 800Mbps to 1.2Gbps (bundle with Mobile) in December 2022. Unfortunately, after receiving and installing the Xfinity XB7 modem, my Internet speed went up to 950Mbps. After hours spent with numerous Xfinity Ambassadors (wish Ambassador should have more power) and switching to an XB8 modem, the Internet speed did not increase. Finally, an Xfinity technician was sent (I guess Ambassadors are very busy and do not do visitation). The technician did run multiple tests and discovered that the speed on the Coax cable (before the modem) was 1.6Gbps while the speed directly after the modem was 950Mbps – precisely the same speed I was receiving! He suspected that the modem might cause the issue with low speed. He suggested switching the modems; unfortunately, he had just XB7 readily available. After activation of the new modem, the internet speed remained the same – 950-960Mbps (never more than 1000Mbps). Interestingly, the Xfinity gateway (http://10.0.0.1/) showed the Internet connection speed on all four LAN Ethernet ports as 1000Mbps. A few days ago, I had another conversation with Xfinity Ambassador, who did run multiple tests but found no issues. Again, I received a similar suggestion to change the modem back to XB8; the Ambassador promised that this step will solve all issues with my Internet speed. I received and activated the new modem, and … appears that the last Ambassador was laying (shame on you!) … no change in the Internet speed, and the Xfinity gateway shows the same connection speed (1000Mbps).

I’m using Intel(R) Ethernet 10G 2P X550-t Adapter on my main computer; the Internet speed is the same on all laptops; I’m wondering does Xfinity placed an incorrect connection speed limit (up to 1000Mbps instead of 1.2Gbps) on my account, or the modem is causing the issue. Should I get my own ARRIS Surfboard G36 to receive the internet speed I was promised?

Hello,

you might want to check your connection.   On the XB8 I believe the bottom right have a ethernet port that support 2.5gb if im not mistaken.  (one of the port does).

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run command dialog box.
  2. Type ncpa. cpl and press Enter to open the Network Connections tool.

Right click on the Ethernet adapter and click on status.

Check to see if the connection connect at at 2.5gb +

@bboysoulo , that's correct - only the fourth ethernet port supports 2.5Gbps; however, this is not the case - the current speed is still 1000Mbps (instead of 1.2Gbps).

Hello @user_fb818, thank you for providing those additional details, and I will be happy to make sure the speed is provisioned correctly for you. Please make sure you are meeting the suggested requirements for speeds up to 1.2 GB. Below is the outline.

Xfinity Internet Minimum System Requirements - For Speeds up to 1.2 Gigabit per second
Operating System Windows 10 (64 bit) or newer or Mac OSX 10.8 or newer. Visit the Microsoft Windows lifecycle fact sheet or Mac OS X Support overview for their latest operating system information.
Browser Google Chrome 56.0.2924, Microsoft Edge (64-bit), Mozilla Firefox 52 (64-bit) or Safari 8 or newer. For more information about different browsers or to download a new one, visit whatismybrowser.com.
Ethernet Cable Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable.

Note: Due to Ethernet overhead, actual download speeds are limited to 940 Mbps over a hardwired connection.
Ethernet 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet interface or adapter for wired connection
CPU/Processor Intel Dual Core i5 or better or AMD Ryzen 5 or better
Memory 8 GB of RAM minimum
Hard Drive / Space 64 GB or larger SSD recommended to achieve maximum download speeds

Let's take a look at the provision as well. Send me a Direct Message to get started.

To send a "Direct Message":

Click "Sign In" if necessary

• Click the "Direct Message chat" icon

• Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon

• Type "Xfinity Support" in the "To:" line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list which appears. The "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line

• Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window

• Press Enter to send it

I no longer work for Comcast.

You're getting ~950 which is what would be expected from a 1Gb ethernet connection, so it's very, very likely your problem is that you're running at a 1Gbps link speed.  Is your main PC connected directly to the XB8 with an ethernet cable? Everything between the PC and XB needs to be capable of 2.5Gb or faster.  The XB8 has several ethernet ports but only one of them supports 2.5Gb.  The rest are 1Gb and will get you ~950 like you're seeing.  It's also possible you have a bad cable or the XB8 just doesn't get along with your 10Gb NIC at 2.5Gbps.  Another possibility is you might have to disable auto negotiation and lock the NIC on your computer at 2.5Gbps.  Same on the XB8 if Comcast actually supports setting link speeds, but I doubt they do.  Comcast gear tends to be plug and play or fail and doesn't generally allow any tweaking.

Also check your link speed in Windows control panel or if you're running Linux "ethtool <interface>" will tell you.  Replace <interface> with the name of the network interface you're using.

Another less likely possibility is are you double cabled?  Usually Windows & Linux will pick the fastest connection if you have more than one cable connected, but it's not guaranteed.  So if you have your 10Gb NIC and a built-in 1Gb NIC connected it's possible you'll end up using the 1Gb NIC.  If you're double cabled I'd unplug the slow one as a test.

I can see no resolution was found here but I am having the same issues but only getting 20Mbps on a 1.2GB plan…. (see below)

I am paying for the 1200mbps package and I am CONSTANTLY getting under 20 mbps. 1% OF MY DATA PLAN.

This has been an ongoing issue since 11/2023 and xfinity has done nothing but replace the modem with an even worse one than before. How do I pay $100 for 1200 Mbps and only get 20Mbps,?? Thats absolutely revolting.
All the resets, unplugging the router, and necessary tests have been done. I am at a loss of what to do here and am about to switch my internet provider because xfinity has always had some kind of issue with the way they do things

Does anyone else have this problem and can suggest something to do? (Don’t suggest resetting my modem or I will lose it)

I wonder what speed I would get by upgrading my current plan (1200Gbps) to 2000Gbps ...
