I went to 10.0.0.1 and inputted admin and password. Now chrome is saying I should reset my passwords.

It's not a site out on the internet. It's the web server that's built in to the router./ gateway device. That is a non internet routable IP address for your home network / LAN. Yes, it's safe ! It uses HTTP not HTTPS, that is why browsers complain. HTTPS is not needed.
