Unable to see HD channels on Steam app installed on LG G1 TV

I’m able to see SD channels listed and watch SD channels but I am unable to see HD channels listed or watch HD channels on the Stream app installed from the LG App Store.  Support was unable to verify if HD channels should be supported.  They instead quoted documentation they couldn’t share that listed LG models supported.  The models the support rep listed where lower end older models no newer than 2019.  The list didn’t include any recent LG TV’s.  Apparently, according to the support rep, C1, CX, G1, an GX are not supported.

However, this link indicates that newer models are supported although doesn’t list models specifically.

Can anyone confirm if HD channels do work with the Steam app on newer model LG TVs like the C1 or G1?

Adding more details.  I’m not sure I could even describe what I am observing as SD.  The channels I am able to see are boxed, with black boarders on left, right, top, and bottom.  It’s like watching a 1980’s era TV.  In the channel lineup I do not see any HD channels.  And if I use the Filter feature, and click on HD it returns an error message that no channels were found.  I am able to view HD channels from my iPad.  And the on my iPad the filter option does list HD channels when I filter for HD channels.

It could be related to my service plan.  I am on a 30+ plan which isn’t even listed on their site.  Probably a grand-fathered plan.  But as mentioned, on other devices I can see the HD channels.  So far, support is clueless.  I could change plans but then it would cost more for a service I’m not really willing to pay more for and they stated they couldn’t switch me back to my original plan because it’s no longer available.  And support stated they don’t think changing the plan will fix the problem.

They sent me a link that supposedly indicated my model was not supported.  But it is the same link above that shows that 2021 models are supported.  My model is a new, high end G1 model manufactured in 2021.  It has WebOS 6.x.  The support link indicates that WebOS 5.0 and above is supported.

Support asked questions like:

Is it connected to internet?

Does it support HD?

Do other apps display HD?

Reinstall the App?

Is it using newest software upgrade?

It’s LG’s fault..

All questions designed to eliminate having to address the problem.  I’m pretty technology savvy.  Believe me, I tried everything possible before I bothered spending hours on the phone.

I’d love if someone with an LG G1 could confirm that they are able to view channels in HD.  At least then I could try to convince them it is related to service plan and I may consider and be willing to change service plans.  I don’t want to change to a more expensive plan and be stuck if that won’t address the issue.

Thank you all in advance.

Hey there! Thank you for the details.  Have you used your TV's remote/or buttons to look at its menu and settings?  It could be there is a setting (Picture->Aspect Ratio?) to set your TV to display HD.

Sheila, this was not helpful.  As mentioned, I don’t even see HD channels listed in the guide. And filtering for HD only filters out all channels.  According to my plan (30 Channels Plus) I should have HD channels for local channels.  This works for the Stream app on my iPhone, and iPad.  Can you actually confirm if the Stream app supports HD channels for the LG TV?

Thank you for letting us know, @Zedemp.

I have a newer LG (CXPUA) and checked the Stream app. I was able to filter by HD preference and didn't have black bars on the show I checked. I'm sorry I don't have a G1 or C1 to test with, but I hope that information is useful to you.

I no longer work for Comcast.

Has there been any followup to this question? I recently purchased an LG NanoCell TV and am having the same problem. The issue has nothing to do with aspect ratio settings, it has to do with the fact that HD channels DO NOT show up as existing in the guide. If you filter the guide by HD channels, it doesn't find any as if the channels don't exist. The HD channels come up when using the Stream app on other devices such as an Android phone, but for the LG TV.

@user_16489a I’ve made the same statement and been entirely ignored. Suffered the indignity of an hours long call rebooting, reinstalling, upgrading WebOS, etc. Was ultimately sent a link that was supposed to list my TV as unsupported. It very clearly described my TV as supported though.

Are you on the 30+ package?  This package is no longer listed on their site. It possibly was never publicly listed. It included local SD+HD+HBO. I was given it when I threatened to quit previously because I didn’t like the available package and prices. The HD seems to work fine when I had an X1 tuner (no longer have this). And the HD works fine on the Stream app on my iPhone and iPad. Maybe they are not handling this package correctly for the beta app for LG? (BTW the app appears to have been in beta for several years according to some forum posts.) And maybe you are on the same or similar limited availability package…..

i like the package and pricing and have been unwilling to experiment with changing the package to see if that would resolve the issue.  There have been posts about a Upcoming Stream app for AppleTV devices and am hopeful it will work better than the beta LG app.

I have the same problem with my LG TV, 2019 Model OLED65C9AUA.  I called Xfinity yesterday and today regarding this issue and still waiting for a resolution.    I verified that I could see my HD channels using the Xfinity Stream App on my iPad, and I could also view my HD channels using the browser on my Mac.  I don't understand how this problem escaped QA.    Could someone from Xfinity please explain the problem an update us on this problem.

@user_c4d061 I’m curious if you are on a non-standard service plan like I am.  Other’s have stated it works fine for them, so I’m trying to figure out if it is related to the service plan 30+ package or some similar plan that may not be well supported.

I was able to get mine resolved. If you don't have the HD rate code on your account, then the HD channels won't show up on the streaming app for WebOS (even though it seems to show up for AndroidTV and Apple devices). Try calling customer service and make sure your package has the HD rates for your service.
