Allow Background Audio not working on iOS 15 (Xfinity Stream)

Allow Background Audio used to work.  Now, under iOS 15, it doesn't seem to work for me.  As soon as I lock the screen the audio stops.

Does the app need an update?  Is there a work-around?

Hello, @DeltaOne, thank you for taking the time to create this post on our Xfinity Forums and bringing this issue to our attention! I am not currently seeing any known issues regarding that feature. Have you attempted any further troubleshooting steps, toggling the Allow Background Audio off and on, re-installing the app itself. Have you seen this issue duplicated on another device?

I've toggled Allow Background Audio off/on.  I've rebooted my iPhone.  I have not tried re-installing the app, I'll try that now.

I think it's interesting that after the iOS 15 update I first noticed a problem with background audio in the Audible app.  I've found that if I reboot my iPhone then background audio works in the Audible app.  But rebooting does not seem to bring it back for the Stream app.

I just deleted and reinstalled the Stream app.  Launched the new download and turned on Allow Background Audio.  Started a channel playing but as soon as I lock the screen the audio stops.

I have a new iPhone coming tomorrow, it will be interesting to test the Stream app on the latest hardware.

Thank you for completing those steps. There is no known issue with this happening. The only Apple is: Apple announced the release of their iOS 15 and macOS Monterey operating system updates, which include a new Internet privacy service called iCloud Private Relay. Certain Xfinity xFi features including Advanced Security, Parental Controls and Active Time Details won’t work on Apple devices which have this service enabled, and other xFi features may be degraded. The xFi experience when iCloud Private Relay is enabled is comparable to what happens when a virtual private network (VPN) is used – the speed of access to websites and services may be slower when using iCloud Private Relay.

Have you noticed this issue on any other device?

Hey! The issue IS happening! Along with ESPN stream being screwed. We know there is “no known issue”! That’s why we are bringing it to your attention

I can understand your frustration with this feature not working after the recent Apple update. By "no known issue", we mean that the Xfinity Stream app is working as intended on other devices, and this issue is related specifically to the recent Apple update.

If you are having a separate issue aside from the background audio not working, with ESPN streaming, please create a separate post so that we can assist with your concerns directly.

I have tried rebooting and reinstalling the Stream app. The problem with Xfinity Stream app not playing background audio after upgrading to IOS 15 has not been fixed.

@bnc Thank you for confirming the troubleshooting steps you've gone through. You are definitely not alone with the issues you're experiencing since after the update. What I would like to do is get your account pulled up, so I can report the issue on your specific account.

Can you please reach out through private message (by clicking on the chat icon on the top right of the page) with your first and last name, name on the account if different, and service address?

I am having issue with hearing static in background when watching the xfinity stream app on my iPad since installing the iOS 15 update. Don’t have issue on my iPhone that completed same update. I’ve tried toggling the background noise and reinstalled app as well.

There is a known issue with the IOS 15.0.1 update and all live streaming services, Xfinity Stream, Disney+, Netflix, Hulu etc.  All come up playback error, primarily with the new IPhone 13 and 13pro.  Apple engineering is aware and should be fixed with next update. :(

Before Xfinity/Apple fix the underlying issue, here’s how you can side-step the problem:

1. While the app is running in the foreground, turn the screen off.

2. The screen goes off, and the playback stops too. Now, turn the screen back on without unlocking the phone.

3. You should see the ‘play’ button on the screen. Press it. The playback should restart.

4. Leave the screen on. The screen will go off after a short while. Voila, the playback continues and your screen is off!

@jt28 My play button is faded out so I can't use it.  Any idea how to fix that or is that possibly part of the problem?

I had same issue with new phone install.

There is a setting within the Xfinity app (not in iPhone settings) …

Click on the Xfinity app menu “stack”, click on the Settings “gear” and Playback Preferences, turn on Allow background audio.  Appears the default on install is OFF.

Then turn OFF your screen.  Turn ON your screen and Play Button should be available.  Press PLAY and the audio restarts.  Then turn OFF your screen and audio continues.  This was IOS 15.1
