I don't understand

So I had to get my sim card replaced yesterday as my phone just stopped getting service around 10am at work I though I pushed buttons on accident at work through my pocket but the employee reassured me thats difficult to do as it showed up wierd on her computer as well so she replaced the sim card and was told 24 to 72 hours and my phone will be on again with the new sim card, am I paying for something I cant use and I still don't know what happened to my phone so for it to reactivate to I need to be on wifi or will it just turn on, I cant even call xfiniry xfinity with it like this
