Xfinity claiming the phone is unlocked but apple says it is locked

Hello,

I have an iphone 16 plus which I bought online and after receiving I saw it is locked to xfinity. As I am with xfinity the number was ported and phone had service with no issues. I am travelling now and would like to have phone unlocked to use abroad. I reached to xfinity multiple times and they always mention that the phone is unlocked. However, on the phone it shows the status as "Sim Locked". I reached out to Apple and they confirmed that it is locked to xfinity. I am confused on what is the next steps to get it unlocked. 

Of course lesson learned that we should never buy for unauthorized dealers but as I am already in the situation I am looking for a solution.
