Parental control does not work (Adult websites not blocked on Kid's devices)

Hello, I just got an Xfinity combo cable-model WiFI router (the basic model) and set it up. WiFi and internet works as expected. I used the Xfinity app to create individual profile for each of my kids. I assigned devices connected to WiFi to each kid. I enabled Parental Controls for the kids profile. I expected that to block adult websites. However that does not work. When testing the kids devices, I'm still able to access adult websites. This feature does not seem to work (it was the reason I switched to using an Xfinity combo router instead of my own!). Any idea why this does now work?

I also tested the "Downtime" schedule, and I confirmed when I set a downtime for the kids devices, that works. I'm not able to access the Internet during downtime. So in general, I see I'm able to control the relevant devices via profile setting, it's just the "Parental Controls" that is not working. Please advise. Thanks!

Thank you very much for reaching out here. Those parental controls should be able to set up either on your app or at the Xfinity.com/myaccount site.

To set up website blocking from the Wireless Gateway's Admin Tool website:

  1. Go to http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Log in with your Xfinity ID and password.
  3. Go to Parental Control > Managed Services. The Managed Services menu allows you to prevent access to applications and services.
  4. Select Enable, then:
    • Blocked Sites: Click Add and enter the URLs of the websites to be blocked, and set up a time schedule.
    • Blocked Keywords: Click Add and enter keyword(s) that appear on websites you want blocked, and set up a time schedule.
    • Trusted Computers: Specify the devices you would like to retain internet access on your network by marking Yes next to the device name. If a device is selected as a Trusted Computer, it bypasses the configured Parental Control settings.

Thank you for your response. I'm aware of the information you provided. I saw it here: Set up parental controls for the internet - Xfinity Support .

This text suggests that I need to manually enter URLs or keywords for websites I want to block. Of course, that's not feasible when I want to block all Adult and harmful content on the Internet. The reason I picked Xfinity Gateway, is because your documentation (Manage people with the Xfinity app - Xfinity Support and Manage devices with xFi — FAQs - Xfinity Support) suggests that all that is done automatically for me: "Comcast has engaged a third-party vendor who maintains a database that maps online content to a set of over 400 categories, such as social media, automotive, gambling, violence, adult content and more. Based on industry standards, best practices and experience, our vendor has recommended which categories are generally deemed appropriate for all ages. Content deemed as appropriate generally does not include profanity, sexual content, violence, child abuse, software piracy, copyright theft, malware, spyware, depictions of alcohol, tobacco, weapons, gambling or drug use.".

So I expected adult web site blocking to work without me entering any URLs manually. I logged into http://10.0.0.1 and as expected, by default none of the connected devices is marked as "trusted". They all shown "no" under "Trusted". So I expect that if the device is connected to a profile with enabled Parental control, that adult website will be blocked. But this does not work...

dargilco. These settings work along with the Xfinity device profiles, so you can assign what access is granted to the user/profile or devices. Have you already used the Xfinity app to set up profiles for each connected device on your home network?
