ANSWERED: Troubleshooting TV No Picture, Black or Blue Screen

Learn how to resolve issues with your TV if it isn't displaying a picture or only shows a blue or black screen.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Make sure all power cables are plugged into working power outlets for the TV and for your X1 TV Box.
  2. Hand-tighten all cable connections to make sure they're not loose.
  3. If using an HDMI cable to connect the X1 TV Box to the TV, confirm that it’s plugged into the proper locations.
  4. Power on both the TV and the X1 TV Box.
  5. Confirm that the TV is set to the proper input.
  6. If you've completed the steps above and there’s still no picture:
    1. Press Exit > Exit > Exit > 720 on your Xfinity remote. This should bring the picture back by setting the resolution to 720.
    2. You can then change to a different resolution by pressing the xfinity button on your remote and selecting the gear icon (Settings) > Device Settings > Video Display and choosing the resolution you want.

Additional Steps

Once you have confirmed you are on the correct input, we recommend to you set your TV to auto-tune to the correct input automatically, this feature is called CEC. To enable CEC in your TV settings.  Refer to your owner’s manual or web to enable CEC.

The process varies greatly based on manufacturer, although relatively simple. Directions for how to do this on popular televisions below.

Samsung:

  1. Press the Home button your TV remote.
  2. Navigate to and select Settings > General.
  3. Select External Device Manager
  4. Select Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) to turn it on.
  5. Next, connect an external device using an HDMI cable, and then turn on the device - it will automatically connect to the TV.

LG:

  1. Hold Settings on your LG remote for 5 seconds to open the Settings menu.
  2. Select All Settings from the bottom right corner of your display.
  3. Select General from the left menu.
  4. Select SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC)
  5. Set SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) to On, and confirm.

Visio:

  1. Press MENU on your Vizio remote.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select CEC.
  4. Use the arrow buttons on your remote and set CEC Function to Enable.
