Text Message Scam - sent from my own phone number? How is this possible?
I just received a text message saying "Free Msg: Your bill is paid for March. Thanks, here's a little gift for you" and has a web link to a Version survey where the reward is a free smart watch where I have 5 minutes to 'claim my prize' and I'd have to enter card details to claim the prize.
I usually ignore these spam messages but this text message came directly from my phone number so I was wondering how that is possible?
It had me super concerned so I went to xfinity live chat and the agent confirmed it was a legit promotion but it still has me super weary because it just feels off.
The agent asked me if I wanted more details on the free promotion and then proceeded to ask me for my address, date of birth, and full social security number.
I ended up just telling the agent never mind because I didn't feel comfortable sharing my full social.
I don't recall any agent ever asking for a full social - especially for promotion details so it's got me super confused and worried my numbers been compromised.
Is this happening to anyone else? How is this real?

Yes, I'm getting spam from myself. I don't think it is a legit offer.

Yeah this number spoofing scam is effecting Verizon users and Xfinity mobile uses the Verizon network. Just happened to me and I read about it on The Verge news site.
Curious why a Comcast rep said it was legit.. I get plenty of text messages from Xfinity but they never ever come from my own phone number.

Hi! Thank you for your message and yes, this is super concerning. I can help look to see if your account was associated with any offers like the one you got but that requires for us to get into your account but asking for this information in a private message. Will it be OK with to do this with me now?

I received text today and it was a group text with 19 numbers.
Regarding the xfinity rep you dealt with, I recently switched service from the prepaid dollar store company Tracphone to Xfinity Mobile and had some tech difficulties keeping old number. I was literally having to call the same 800 number back and forth between the two companies to get it worked out and noticed quickly that they are both serviced from same call center company. I only mention this to suggest that perhaps other carriers are too and somehow the scam has folks working as reps. I realize it sounds far fetched but the rep you talked to is highly suspicious and this scam is not exclusive to Xfinity.
