Issue after recent security update. Bluetooth speaker battery level not displayed

I have a Samsung Galaxy 7. Until the recent security update, the battery level of my hands free bluetooth speaker was always displayed on my phone a few seconds after I turned the speaker on. Now it wasn't great. The highest it displayed was 90% and I knew when it hit 70% I should think about charging the speaker. For the record, I never saw 80% or any other percentage other than 90 and 70. But it was some info at least.

Every since the security update I installed a few days ago, those percentages no longer display at all. I understand there is an app I can add, but that seems unnecessary to me, since this was working well enough without the app before the update.

Any insight as to what is going on?  Other than adding the app, any suggestions or work arounds?

For the record, the security update was installed on 2/7/2020. I see in the settings "Security patch level: December 1. 2019."

Thanks in advance.
