If smart watch cell service is removed from an apple watch, do I get charged the remaining balance?

I'm wanting to try out apple watch, and I don't know if I'm going to stay with it. If I have a montly charge for the apple watch hardware, and I cancel the monthly charge for the cell service, can I keep paying off the apple watch monthly, or does the remaining balance become due?
