Why do I have a $6.10 San Francisco Access Line Tax on my bill?  I live in the East Bay and never go to San Francisco.

Xfinity Employee! Did you get back to the forum or this thread regarding this query. Seems like Xfinity is setting itself up for a law suite with this charge, isnt it? You should look at the address where the line is registered to and if it is not in San francisco, then you should not tax them. It is not fair.

@BruceW That reference says: "The Access Line Tax (ALT) is imposed on persons subscribing to telephone communications services within the City and County of San Francisco, and applies to each “access line” within the City’s tax jurisdiction, subject to certain exceptions."  I am not within the tax jurisdiction of the City or County of San Francisco, I am in the East Bay.  I want to know by what statutory authority Comcast can pass this charge (assuming they were even charged it in the first place) on to people outside the SF tax jurisdiction area. If people call  from New York into San Francisco, can San Francisco tax them?? That makes no sense. So where do they draw the line, and by what authority?

@user_47fiw1 I was intrigued by this post. I live in the Bay Area. What is the area code of your cell number? Perhaps that is why? Just a thought...

All of my phones are 510 prefix (East Bay) - and have been for 30 years.

Same issue with me. Looks like I was being charged this for last 4-5 months.

I just discovered this issue as well. You all might have been charged this fee for longer than the 4-5 months that you think you have. We might have been charged for years but just did not notice. The 911 tax fee in CA is supposed to be 30 cents a line. I think prior to 2024, the 911 fee included the SF fee. In 2024, they pulled this San Francisco Access Line Tax separate from the 911 fee. That was when we all noticed that we were being overcharged because we don't even live in SF.

I am in the East Bay and have a 510 area code, so I should never have been charged with this. Somehow the 911 tax fee prior to 2024 was over $3 per line. With 4 lines, they have been basically overcharging $12 minimum per month.

Same issue with me. Have been made to reach out to customer service every month to reverse the charge and they promise that they will permanently fix the issue, however new month bill keeps showing "San Francisco Access Line Tax" amount.

Can someone please tell me why I am having this huge charge on my bill - "San Francisco Access Line Tax" -> 6.28$. This is a ripoff considering that I dont live in San Franscisco. I live all the way down south.

Seems like this is a new charge and is not being applied to existing users or lines.

Yeah new charge since start of this year, however it is applied to existing users/lines as well, not just new users. (Either way doesn't matter since if any person doesn't reside in San Francisco it shouldn't be applied at all)

Guess it is other way round for xfinity, overcompensating at expense of customers!

@user_m1g7db : I checked with some of the existing users. They dont have this charge at all. I added a new line in March and i am seeing it since then.

BTW, when i chatted with a customer rep, they sent me this: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/most-common-taxes-fees-surcharges-on-your-bill. This does not have the SF access line tax why is being levied, but everything else matches.

Why am I being charged a fee for this "San Francisco Access Line Tax". I dont live in San Francisco and never have.  I do live in California but in San Jose.

I started off my service in March.

It seems like only a few of the subscribers in San Jose are being charged and the others arent.

Why, Please tell me why?

@user_3zjaud  After getting nowhere with Xfinity Mobile customer service..... I was called by a Comcast representative after I filed a complaint with CPUC. Seems there is a San Jose Telephone Line tax of $1.57 per line (https://library.municode.com/ca/san_jose/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TIT4REFIBUTA_CH4.52TELITA)

"4.52.210 - Amount of tax.  A.

The amount of the tax imposed by this chapter shall be one dollar fifty-seven cents ($1.57) per month per access line and eleven dollars and eighty-two cents ($11.82) per month per trunk line."

and the they just titled it wrong on our bill. She said "engineering is working on fixing the tax title. I mentioned that people in cities other than San Jose also have the SF one listed, but the rep. wouldn't address that concern directly since not my complaint.

I ended up filing a complaint with the FCC (I was deciding between the CPUC and the FCC. Ended up doing FCC because when I called the CPUC, I got someone who was less than helpful and encouraging). It seems like you got a better response than I did. The Comcast Representative that I talked to tried to [Edit: Inflammatory] me but eventually said she would refer it to someone higher up. She called two more times saying she was still waiting for a response and 3 weeks later, I did not get any response but I did get an email from the FCC saying Comcast had responded. I am still waiting for that response.

I pretty much after much research and seeing other posts on here (City and the amount charged) had figured out that they indeed were charging the right amount but labeling it all SF for other cities in the Bay Area. The label for SF just wasn't matching with what SF regulations actually has the amount and was matching what the respective cities actually have.   Seems like that is exactly what they told you and is what was wrong. It is good that they finally realize their issue and hopefully are fixing it for all cities. I had issues just getting them to admit that East Bay Cities and other parts of the Bay Area are not San Francisco. Thanks for posting this so I know there is finally a resolution!

@user_dajx10 That's crazy! I left Xfinity Mobile in Feb. I was on the a shared BTG plan for $12, 2 lines. My total taxes was around $4.50. And I live in CA! I can't believe the taxes went up that much since then. How many lines do you have? That might explain the higher amount.
