Can't receive group MMS messages on iPhone from Android users after using an eSIM

I used an eSim while traveling to Europe a few months ago, and ever since then, I've been unable receive group MMS messages that involve Android users. I can send, but when anyone replies to the group, even an iPhone user, the messages come trough as separate texts.

Also, I can't send any media to Android users from within iMessage, but I can initiate a text from within Photos to send media to Android users.

I know this has something to do with my use of an eSIM because my partner also used an eSIM during our trip, and he has had the same issue ever since. I have an iPhone 12 Mini, he has a 13 Pro. We're both running the most current iOS, and this issue has persisted through several software updates. We've tried everything—turning messaging settings on and off, resetting network settings, backing up/wiping the phone/restoring, etc. Nothing has fixed the issue.

Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

Thanks.

Good evening, @CatHouse415, and thanks for reaching out through our Community Forums page for help with your iPhone SMS concerns. I appreciate you providing the steps you've already taken in trying to get this resolved as well. Since this does sound more like a device issue than a network issue, have you tried reaching out to Apple for device support once you switched your SIM card back?

@XfinityMacey Thanks for the reply. I wasn't using a physical SIM card—I was using an eSIM. An easy solution to this problem would have been to delete the APN settings on my phone, but Xfinity hides APN settings for some reason. Fortunately I found a user on one of Apple's forums who was having the same issue (also with Verizon/Xfinity). She said Verizon T2 support had her reset all settings, which restored her ability to MMS. This solution also worked for me. It was a pain, but at least now I can group text with non-iPhone users.

So in the end, it was not a device issue—it was a carrier issue.

what is the fix? I am having the same issue with Android users.  It's only been 2 days since switching from T-Mobile to Xfinity Mobile and its been problem after problem after problem.  Once one issue is resolved, you find out you have another issue.  I have an IPhone 13 Pro Max and the latest issue is I can't send pics to Android users.  I see several posts about this same issue but no fix.  Can I manually fix this issue myself rather than spending more hours on the phone with XM???  Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have.

There are several issues with MMS on XM in particular, and other carriers:

1.) XM has a 600kb limit to an MMS, most other carriers are 1MB+

2.) XM charges for data used in an MMS, therefore cellular data should be enabled, and of course MMS should be enabled.

3.) Each carrier handles MMS with similar but different protocols/coding, separating the text from the data/pictures and then combining them again on the receiving end. Therefore cross carrier MMS can be a mess.

XM is unlikely to offer any solutions.

Bottom line is to stick with iMessage and WhatsApp, or email, and only use MMS for small pictures to XM users, or other carriers where you find that you are successful.

@DaveO3 Thanks for the suggestion.  IMessage only works for IPhone users.  My issue is with Android users I am responding to with MMS.  I honestly am too old to use WhatsApp.  No pun intended.  I am now regretting the switch to XM seriously!
