Can I use the eSIM for International if my phone is not paid off yet?

I am going to be going overseas and would like to get an international eSIM for data.  Am I able to do that for the few weeks while I am over there if my phone is not yet paid off or unlocked?  I know that won't work if I put a different physical SIM card in, but was wondering if it will since I am just keeping my Xfinity SIM card and getting a secondary eSIM.
