ANSWERED: What is the Xfinity TV Remote App and how does it work?

Setting up the Xfinity TV Remote app

  1. Download the Xfinity TV Remote app from the iTunes App Store to your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. For Android, download from Google Play.

  2. Select the Xfinity TV Remote app on your device. Select Get Started.

  3. Sign in with your Xfinity ID and password.

  4. If you have an Apple device, once logged in, select your preferred TV box by tapping the icon in the upper left corner.
  5. You can visit Settings to select a default TV box. Be sure that your TV Box and TV are both turned on. When your eligible TV Boxes are displayed on the app, a message can be sent to your TV Box by clicking "TEST" to match the name listed on the Xfinity TV Remote app.
  6. Tap on each TV Box to enter a name that you'll be able to remember in the future for controlling your TVs.
  7. If you have more than one eligible TV Box, go through the same process for each TV Box in your home.
  8. If you have an eligible DVR on your account, DVR Manager will also be activated so that you can schedule recordings from your device.

Troubleshooting common problems

Tuning your TV from the Xfinity TV Remote app

There are several ways you can tune to a TV show using the Xfinity TV Remote app:

  • In TV Listings, tap Watch on TV to tune your TV to the selected program in TV Listings.
  • In TV Listings, tap Watch Channel or the channel number/logo to tune directly to that channel.
  • In TV Listings, tap Filter in the upper right-hand side of the grid. You will be able to filter by a range of options, including your Favorite Channels, specific genres, HD only, Closed Captioning availability or SAP.
  • In Xfinity On Demand, select Watch XOD to tune your TV to the On Demand program information screen.
    Note: You will need your Comcast remote to complete the purchase/watch for play.

X1 Customers

  • It's now even easier to find TV shows and movies using the Xfinity TV Remote app! X1 customers can tap the Microphone icon and say things like, "Record Saturday Night Live," "The Secret Life of Pets," and "Channel 810." However, please note that this functionality only works on Xfinity X1 TV Boxes (RNG150 devices are excluded) and requires Apple devices have iOS 10 or higher and Android devices have Jellybean or higher.

  • Use the Directional Pad and Numeric Keypad Functionality to control your TV box. To use the Directional Pad, select the Microphone icon, then the Directional Pad button (in center). To use the Numeric Keypad, select the Numeric Keypad button (on the right).

Controlling other TV Boxes from the Xfinity TV Remote app

You can control any eligible TV Box in your home with the Xfinity TV Remote app. To select a particular TV Box connected to the TV you're watching:



Apple Devices

  1. Select the TV Box name in the upper left-hand corner of the app.
  2. You'll see all of the eligible TV Boxes that can be used with the Xfinity TV Remote app.
  3. Select the name of the TV Box you want to control.
  4. You're ready to go!


Android Devices

  1. Select the TV Box name from Settings.
  2. You'll see the TV Box name you are currently controlling, and can tap to see all of the eligible TV Boxes that can be used with the Xfinity TV Remote app.
  3. Select the name of the TV Box you want to control.
  4. You're ready to go!

Top tips for using the Xfinity TV Remote app

Get started

If the TV Box you are trying to use doesn't appear in the list on your device:

  1. Make sure the TV Box is compatible with the app.
  2. Make sure the TV Box is turned on, and you have an active Internet connection. You'll need to be signed in to your Comcast account to sync up your TV Box with the device.
    • Note: If your TV Box isn't on the list of compatible devices, it won't appear as an option in your Xfinity TV Remote app.
      • However, you can still use the app to search for regular television programming and Xfinity On Demand content.
  3. Make sure you have signed into the application with your Comcast.net email address or Xfinity ID and password to sync up your TV Box with the device.

Change channels

  1. Choose the TV Box you want to watch from on your mobile device by clicking the icon in upper left corner or selecting a default within Settings.
  2. Search the TV Listings to select the channel or program you want to watch. (Select Watch on TV or Watch Channel.)
  3. Select Watch XOD to view an Xfinity On Demand program.
    • Note: You will need to use your Xfinity X1 remote to confirm the purchase of an Xfinity On Demand movie or TV show.
  4. If the program is protected by your Parental Control settings, you will need to use your Comcast remote to enter the four-digit PIN you have established.
  5. If you're currently recording a program or watching Xfinity On Demand on your TV Box, you may need to exit to live programming before you can change the channel with your device.

Schedule a recording

Xfinity X1 and non-X1 customers with Comcast DVR service can schedule and manage recordings using the Xfinity TV Remote app.

  1. From the TV Listings, select the program you want to record.
  2. Select the Record button, and you will be prompted to record the program or record the series.

Note: You can't record Xfinity On Demand programs.

Using voice remote functionality

X1 customers can control their TV boxes using voice commands like, "Record Saturday Night Live," "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Channel 810."

  • Voice remote functionality requires iOS 10 or later on Apple devices and Android version 4.2 or later on Android devices.
  • RNG150 TV boxes are excluded.

Be sure your device meets the minimum system requirements, and that you've updated to the latest version of the app by visiting the iOS App Store or Google Play. Check your settings to make sure you selected a default television and DVR, if applicable. If you're still having difficulties, try signing out and back in again or reinstalling the app.

How do I update my app version?
