ANSWERED: How to Self Install and Activate Your Internet Equipment

Find out how you can activate your Xfinity Internet and Voice services with an Xfinity Gateway or an approved owned (third-party) device.

Activate with an Xfinity Gateway

  1. Download the Xfinity app.
    • Create your Xfinity ID and password.
  2. Identify your device.
    • Look for the QR code on the bottom or side of your Xfinity Gateway.
      • Focus on the QR code with your smartphone’s camera.
      • When it has been scanned, you'll see a green checkmark.
    • You can also manually enter your gateway’s CM MAC Number or SSID number.
  3. Place your gateway or modem.
    • Find the cable outlet most centrally located in your home.
    • Place your gateway or modem in an open area away from exterior walls, metal surfaces, microwaves and windows.
      • Don't place it on the floor.
      • Avoid cramped spaces and anything that can block the device signal.
  4. Connect your gateway.
    • Screw one end of the coaxial cable into the Cable In/RF In port on your gateway or modem and the other end into the cable wall outlet.
      • Make sure this connection is finger-tight.
    • Plug the power cord into the back of your gateway and then into an electrical outlet.
    • If you subscribe to Xfinity Voice service, connect your telephone to the Tel 1 connection on your gateway or modem using a telephone cord.
  5. Name your WiFi network and create a password.
  6. Wait for your gateway or modem to be ready.
    • Your gateway or modem may take up to 10 minutes to be ready to activate.
    • The Xfinity app will show you your progress during this step.
    • Don't unplug your gateway or modem during this process.
    • Make sure the lights appear as described below before moving on to the next step:
      • If you have an Xfinity Gateway with multiple lights on the front, the Power, US/DS and Online lights should remain solid for at least one minute, and the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz lights should start blinking.
      • If you have an Xfinity Gateway with only one light on the top, it should remain solid white for at least a minute.
  7. Connect all your devices.
    • Once your network is set up, your Xfinity Internet and Voice services are ready to go.
    • You can connect all wireless devices, like laptops and smartphones, to your WiFi network.
    • If you replaced your Xfinity Gateway and kept the same settings during activation, your previously connected devices should automatically reconnect.
      • Note: Xfinity Gateways come with a built-in Xfinity WiFi home hotspot (xfinitywifi) that may take up to 24 hours to broadcast. To learn about the hotspot, see Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot FAQs.

Activate with an approved owned (third-party) device

  1. Place your modem.
    • Find the cable outlet most centrally located in your home.
    • Place your gateway or modem in an open area away from exterior walls, metal surfaces, microwaves and windows.
      • Don't place it on the floor.
      • Avoid cramped spaces and anything that can block the device signal.
  2. Connect your modem.
    • Plug the power cord into the back of your modem and then into an electrical outlet.
    • Screw one end of the coaxial cable into theCable In/RF Inport on your modem and the other end into the cable wall outlet.
      • Make sure this connection is finger-tight.
    • If you subscribe to Xfinity Voice service, connect your telephone to the Tel 1 connection on your modem using a telephone cord.
    • Wait for your modem to be ready.
      • Your modem may take up to 10 minutes to be ready to activate. See the manufacturer instructions for your third-party device for specific guidance.
  3. Establish a temporary internet connection either through WiFi or an Ethernet cable.
    • Connect through WiFi (if your modem supports a wireless connection):
      • Look for the Network Name (SSID) and Password printed on the side, back or bottom of your modem.
      • The name may look like Home-XXXX or XFSETUP-XXXX.
      • Go to the WiFi settings on your WiFi-enabled device, like a smartphone or home computer, and select the Network Name from the list of available networks. Enter the network password when prompted. If you're prompted to enter a PIN instead of a password, click the Connect Using a Security Key link to enter the password in the Security Key field.
    • Connect through an Ethernet cable:
      • Plug the Ethernet cable into one of the open ports on your modem until it clicks.
      • Plug the other end into the Ethernet port of your computer.
      • The Ethernet port will light up when successfully connected.
  4. Activate your modem.
    • If you don't automatically see a welcome message on your smartphone or computer screen to begin setup once you've established an internet connection:
      • Open a web browser and go to xfinity.com/activate.
      • Click the If you’re in a location with a pre-installed gateway or activating your Xfinity Voice, click here to begin option at the bottom of the screen.
      • Follow the prompts to verify your Xfinity account and complete the activation process.
    • Note: When you've finished activation, your gateway or modem may restart, and it may take up to 10 minutes before you can connect to your home network.
  5. Connect to your home network.
  6. After activation, connect your devices to your WiFi name and password for your home network, if your modem supports a wireless connection.
    • Go to the WiFi settings on your WiFi-enabled devices. Once you see your WiFi name appear in a list of available networks, you can connect your devices to your home network.
    • Select your home network WiFi name and connect with the password. If you changed this during activation, be sure to use the new one that you set up.

Ways to activate your Getting Started kit devices

All Getting Started kits include installation and activation information. You can find this in your Xfinity folder.

Activate your equipment using an app

If you’re activating Xfinity WiFi Boost Pods or an Xfinity xFi Gateway (with the exception of the xFi Fiber Gateway, Arris X5001), you can use the Xfinity app for easy activation. After setup, you can use the Xfinity app for management of your home network.

To determine the type of gateway you have, check the make and model information located on the bottom of your device. You can also sign in to the Devices page on xfinity.com.

  1. Download the Xfinity app for free from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Sign in using your Xfinity ID and password.
    • Notes:
      • If you don’t have an Xfinity ID and password, you can create these on the sign-in page.
      • If you’re activating a gateway, you might be prompted to start the activation as soon as you sign in.
        • If you aren’t prompted, proceed to Step 3.
  3. Once you're signed in, select the Account tab from the bottom right of the Xfinity app.
  4. Select Activate xFi Gateway or Modem under the Devices section.
  5. If you’re activating WiFi Boost Pods, select Activate WiFi Boost Pods under the Devices section.

Activate your equipment online

If you’re activating Xfinity Internet, Voice or any TV services other than X1, you can easily activate your equipment online.

  1. Connect your Internet, Voice and/or TV equipment and turn it on.
  2. Go online to xfinity.com/activate for easy step-by-step activation instructions.
