Landline to Xfinity Voice

I am switching my landline to xfinity and keeping my number, when setting up modem if I connect phone jack (on wall) to modem port 1,  I get dial tone but phone wont ring or go to voice and auto disconnects after 6 seconds.

If I connect phone directly to modem, the  phone will ring but other phones in house not directly connected to modem do not work.

What is correct configuration for voice and are wireless phones the only viable option? Does this mean phone is not truly land line but rather voip? Thanks for your help.

Did you disconnect your previous provider’s wiring from the NID? Very important step

I am not sure what NID stands for?   It was new modem so completely new install. New phone cable/cord, but expected would have to run cord from wall phone jack to modem and than connect modem to phone.  Doing that however phone won't work.  Connecting phone to modem, phone  will ring but unclear once we cut service from original phone provider if othre wired phones will still work.
