Cannot read the comments people have made to someone's post

Someone will ask a question and it will show there have been 3 comments from various members regarding the question. But those comments are not viewable to me. This pertains to even new posts that have not been closed ... Why can't I see the comments (even if I try clicking the little comments icon).

It is no help for me just to read a question someone has posted, and maybe there is an answer, but I can't see it.
