SMTP Server Reports IP is Not Permitted to Send Messages

This started about a week ago. The exact message is:

An error occurred while sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: resomta-ch2-19v.sys.comcast.net resomta-ch2-19v.sys.comcast.net CSI IP 184.170.166.79 is not permitted to send messages. Please contact support if you feel this is in error..

We are using Outlook on Metronet. The IP above is a Metronet IP in our city. Web mail through Infinity works. We have tried multiple things on POP3 and IMAP (different computers, Thunderbird, deleting and reentering account, etc) none of which work except one. If I connect through a VPN all works fine (unlike all the people on a long thread I read who had problems connecting through a VPN). I'm using UltraVPN and I've tried it through several servers in the U.S. and I just used a VPN through France and it also worked. As soon as I turn the VPN off and try to send I get the message above. I gave up doing my testing through Outlook and am doing this testing through Thunderbird.

Iphone also could not send. I installed the Ultra VPN on the Iphone and just like the desktop all works as normal as long as I have the VPN connected. As soon as I disconnect from it, the iphone can't connect with the smtp server. Iphone is on Verizon. But then I remebered that the Iphone was on wifi. I disconnected from Wifi and sure enough could not send an email. Which all brings me back to the suspicion that Comcast has somehow blocked the Metronet IP.

@joellen01

It appears that the IP in question has been placed on a global blacklist.

You can get more information in regards to the listing here:

https://csi.cloudmark.com/en/reset/

I will also be PMing you with more details, as I have reached out to the blacklist to get more information for you.

I apologize if there was any miscommunication. The blacklist is not a Comcast blacklist - it is a global one followed by many email providers. The resolution would have to be worked out between the IP Space owner(Metronet) or one of its representatives and the blacklisting(https://csi.cloudmark.com/en/reset/). I did also send you more details in a PM from the blacklist which indicated an issue with a large volume of spam being sent from the IP.

Your help on this is really appreciated. Metronet professes that they can't do anything about it but they are giving me a static IP at no charge for the first year. I'm letting them know by email that they can do something about it and their response is not quality customer service. The static IP will of course solve the problem and I have no doubt that in a year's time the problem will have been resolved.

i have a similar error: resomta-ch2-12v.sys.comcast.net CSI IOP 45.56.151.207 is not permitted to send messages.  I saw in another forum, where a mobile device could be trying to log in too frequently with a bad ID.  Any ideas?

I just had the same problem.  I called customer support, and they did not have a clue.  Kept telling me the settings in my email app were not correct.  It's worked for years.  Thanks for this.  I have NordVPN, but had it set to not start automatically.  Just found out it was on, and the IP address I was assigned was blocked.  This forum gave me the answer.  Surprised customer service did not know this.

Thank you.

I have been battling the problem of my (PIA) VPN being blocked on the SMTP server.  Earlier I was able to get the IP address(es) unblocked, but only after letters to Comcast's VP of Customer Experience.  Recently the adresses are being blocked again.

I will not burden you with the experience of trying to get the problem solved through regular and esclated customer support.  Suffice it to say that the problem persists.

How can I get the IP address(es) unblocked.  Having to disconnect from VPN when sending email totally defeats its purpose.

One remedy.

I came across the same issue as I just recently switched from Comcast to Metronet.

I set up a Metnonet email, added it to my email client, then when I got an error on outgoig from the comcast address, and was asked what smtp server I wanted to use, I selected the metronet one and I message was sent, and as comcast.net mail.
