Sent and Trash folders have emptied themselves

Overnight, everything that was in both my Sent and Trash folders has disappeared.  I did not change any settings to make this happen nor did I do the deleting myself.  I tried to recover deleted messages and it says there are none.  Why did this happen and how do I stop it from happening in the future?
