how to filter for special characters in 'from'?

From = "ReplaceYourWindows⋆.8 <iAw4Ms7jbP0L-aruvztkleqdcipmyj-defbAacEB@" I remove what was on the right side after the @ because that always changes.

Why can't comcast have some kind of general filter that looks for things like 'â', or a combinatio of letters or words that have no meaning"

I have From filters for 'â', '~', '!!', '<<', but the emails still get throug to my outlook on my desktop.

How can I stop this?

@XfinityKei My question title is "how to filter for special characters in 'from'?", so yes...I want to filter out any email with special charachers in From.  I also want to know why Comcast cannot do this, for special characters, and words that are nonsensicual.

Here is a great Xfinity link, https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/spam-filters-and-email-blocking-new-experience that will help walk you through how to set up filters. You should be able to set up the filter for the special characters.

I no longer work for Comcast.

@nhlou Thanks for clarifying for us. I'm sorry to hear that the spam filters are not catching everything that comes in. How often are you seeing emails come through? Have you already blocked those emails and they're still getting through as well?

Do you also use a pop client/3rd party email client as well?

I am looking for an explination of why my spam filders are not working.  Can you explain why the filter that I have shown in my last posting does not work?

Ok thanks for clarifying with us. Lets continue to work together to isolate the issue for a resolution. To confirm the messages are only getting through on outlook and not through your Xfinity emails?

Have you set up these same filters through your outlook settings?

This is appearing to be a waste of my time.  I am asking you how to stop the spam email from getting through to my outlook, and you are evading answering my question.  I am starting to believe that you are artificial, and, that perhaps Comcast users need to band together to get Comcast to do things correctly.

... I am starting to believe that you are artificial ...

They're not. You can tell because an AI wouldn't be so clueless.

Could you describe exactly what you mean by "getting through to my outlook"? Is Outlook configured with POP or IMAP? Are the messages showing up in Outlook's inbox folder, or elsewhere? Do they appear to be read or unread?

The filter you posted should move matching messages to the Trash folder, but would leave them unread. If Outlook is configured to use IMAP the messages would still show up unread in Outlook's trash folder.

First, thank you for replying.

My question here is, why are my Comcast email filters not stopping the email in comcast, so that it does not get through to Outlook on my computer.

The comcast filter is not moving those emails to the Comcast trash folder.  They are going to the trash folder in Outlook.  How to fix so that they do not get through to Outlook?

The email filters on the Comcast side of things only apply when you access the email through our web client. When you access your email through a 3rd party client like Outlook, the filter will apply through Outlook.

The emails are not first filtered through our web client before being sent to Outlook. They are filtered by the email client you use to access your email. So when you access your email client through Outlook, the filter is applied through outlook.

... isn't the filter that I have on Comcast email supposed to stop them?

Of course. Questions like "Can you clarify if these emails are coming in through your Xfinity email account and then coming over to outlook? Or are they only showing up in outlook." are nonsensical and indicate that the person posting them has a very poor understanding of the subject. The filtering you set up in webmail should be reflected in Outlook.

But as asked above, could you describe exactly what you mean by "getting through to my outlook"? Is Outlook configured with POP or IMAP? Are the messages showing up in Outlook's inbox folder, or elsewhere? Do they appear to be read or unread?

@XfinityChristian wrote:"The email filters on the Comcast side of things only apply when you access the email through our web client. ..."

That's incorrect. The action that webmail filters take affects email clients as well, as the filters change the state and location of the messages on the mail servers that clients draw from.

Maybe I am not understanding what 'Discard' means.  My assumption is that it means that the email is deleted, and does not go anywhere else. Does Discard mean or act differently than that?

My assumption is  that those emails with those characters in the 'From', would disappear, and not get passed from Comcast to my Outlook email junk folder on my computer, which I believe is POP (set up some years ago)

At this time, there are not any settings that delete or remove emails, they can only be placed into other folders, such as spam, and then manually deleted. This is an effort to reduce mislabeled items from being automatically deleted due to filter settings.

Maybe I am not understanding what 'Discard' means ...

Unfortunately Comcast as never documented its email filters in any detail. And the vendor who supplied the system hasn't done much better. The only detailed documentation I know of is at https://documentation.open-xchange.com/components/middleware/http/7.10.6/index.html#mail-filter. Unfortunately, its complete description of the "discard" action is "Discards a mail without any processing". Not nearly enough detail IMHO.

... not get passed from Comcast to my Outlook email junk folder on my computer, which I believe is POP ...

If Outlook was configured to use POP it would only be able to see messages in the webmail Inbox. If it is loading messages from other folders like spam/junk then that means Outlook is using IMAP.

"If Outlook was configured to use POP it would only be able to see messages in the webmail Inbox."  Yes, it is getting from the Comcast Inbox (as they never got to 'Discard', or any other Comcast folder), and Outlook itself is putting in Junk (and sometimes not).

So, it sounds like Comcast email spam is not up to snuff, and, that they really don't care (as they have not fixed the problems).

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and express your concerns with the spam filter on your Xfinity email. Typically, you will want to go to Xfinity.com to check your email if you are relying on Xfinity spam filtering to do its job, but use Outlook spam filtering if you are using Outlook to manage your Xifnity emails.

If you like, you can send us a PM here, and we will be glad to fill out a ticket to ensure the Xfinity Spam filters are working correctly. Here are the detailed steps to direct message us:

• Click "Sign In" if necessary

• Click the "direct messaging" icon (upper right corner of this page)

• Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon

• Type "Xfinity Support" in the to line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list

• Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window

• Press Enter to send your message

I don't know what to suggest other than changing the webmail filter Action to "Move to folder". That one works for me to move messages to folders I defined. I don't know if it would work to move messages to Spam or Trash.
