emailed redlined word attachments appear as clean pdf documents

When I open up an email received on my PC computer that has an attached redlined "Word" document, the attachment opens up as a clean PDF. When I open up the same email on my IMAC, the attachment is the correct redlined "Word' document. The problem would therefore appear to be with the settings on my PC. Any advice aas to which settings need to be changed on my PC computer?

Some things that are probably worth mentioning:  How are you getting email on the two systems?  Do you use an email client?  If so, same email client(s) on both systems? What does the email client on each system claim the attached file to be?  For example, I'm looking at an email now that has three files attached all ending in .pdf.  Is the sender of the email sending both?  It's common to send pdfs as a backup for anyone who might not have Word. Oh - DOES the PC have Word?

@strega7

Thank you for responding to my questions.

I don't know what an "email client" is, so I can't answer your "email client" related questions.

I run Xfinity email on my PC.

I sent the original "Word" document (as an attachment to my Xfinity email) to the Xfinity email address of a third party (who also has Xfinity email running on his Imac). The third party made changes to the "Word" document and emailed back to my Xfinity email address a redline of the redrafted "Word" document. However, when I opened the attachment to the third party's return email on my PC, it did not appear as a redlined "Word" document showing the changes made, but rather as a clean "PDF" document which incorporated the third party's changes but did not show them with redlining.

As a test, I then tried opening up the return email attachment on my Imac and it correctly appeared as a "Word" redline.

Both my PC and my imac are running "Word" software.

I am assuming that because both of the sender and recipient use Xfinity email, the problem lies with the settings on my PC and would appreciate information as to what the relevant settings are and what changes I can make to eliminate this problem.                                                                              K

Hm... Well I tried but couldn't reproduce it.  I got a .docx back.  Does it say it's a .docx file in the email attachment?

Yes it says ".docx", Also if I access a redline document that appears on the One Drive files on my pc by attaching it to a composed email, the document that my pc attaches says "docx" but is a pdf clean version of what is supposed to be a redlined "Word" document.

Hello, @mbf107577 Thanks for reaching out to us on the forums! Since this doesn't seem to be directly caused by your internet connection according to Google the issue on your PC is likely due to Microsoft Word settings or the default attachment viewer, which automatically accepts changes or renders them as a clean version. To fix this, change the "Markup View" or "Track Changes" settings, and check the "Trust Center" to prevent automatic conversion.

The behavior you are seeing is likely due to the Xfinity Connect webmail browser previewer, which often converts Word documents into a simplified PDF-like view for quick reading. This preview window typically strips away "Track Changes" (redlines) to show a "clean" final version.

To fix this on your PC, you should adjust how you interact with the attachment rather than changing a deep system setting. Let us know if that helps.
