By default do NOT mark email as read as?

How do I set the default setting in the Xfinity web email app to NOT mark emails as read after preview?

There isn't a setting for that. Once an email is read, it can be marked as unread in the more actions menu.

You say "once it is read".  Suppose it has not been read... it still doesn't show as unread.

Thanks for verifying! It's too bad as they used to have that option but I feared it was gone. Thanks for the time to confirm!
