April 18th comcast broke my email service

Morning of april 17 th everything was fine.  Morning of april 18th my email application said it could not send emails.

send/receive error:  "your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified"

I have windows 7 because my solidworks application can't run on windows 10/11 ..... so the latest version of outlook I could use is 2016, bought it, downloaded it, and still my email is broken.  When I called comcast there was a message before getting to the prompts that said on april 17, 2023 comcast is going to not support old security email applications, and they also said at this time they would not do anything about it.  Web bases email works fine, so I guess if I can't resolve this that is what I will have to resort to.

computer: dell m6800

OS: windows 7 64 bit professional

email: outlook 2016 professional

It's not outlook 2016, it's the default TLS version windows 7 shipped with.  TLS 1.2 didn't exist back then.

Before you try this, backup your system registry:  http://support.microsoft.com/help/322756

It's also not a bad idea to back up your entire system and create a system restore disk (windows 7 ntbackup).  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/description-of-the-windows-nt-backup-restore-utility-for-windows-7-and-for-windows-server-2008-r2-47c276ff-5788-123b-ff5b-418b5e9a13a8

Try the instructions here to install the service pack that includes TLS 1.2.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392

If Windows Update didn't add it already, try to install the service pack listed above.  It will say already applied if it is already installed.  It's recommended that you don't try to add registry keys yourself.

Download the "Easy Fix" utility instead from Microsoft (only Microsoft) from the link above.  See if it can change your default TLS version.

After you do that, Check the registry key in the link above.  See if it is set:

DefaultSecureProtocols Value

Protocol enabled

0x00000008

Enable SSL 2.0 by default

*CAUTION:  using a security update orphaned OS just to check your email or web surf is a bad idea.

Welp.  You're out of support on Windows 7, but the service pack is still in the catalog.  For now:

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB976932

Info and Easy fix here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392#bkmk_easy

Alternatively, you can just install a 3rd party email client like Tunderbird (free), or use webmail.

The exact same thing happened to me.  I want to continue to use Outlook, but as of yesterday I couldn't send emails, and today I get the "unable to synchronize" pop up.  Very disappointed, because I've been using Outlook for probably 15 years and Xfinity has decided FOR ME, that it's not good enough any more.

@chris3232 Well, you are going to have to move on sooner or later on all email services.  TLS v1.0 and 1.1 are insecure -- meaning you've got a security problem, and have a password/identity theft issue that is likely to impact you sooner or later if you keep using a broken security protocol.  This can potentially cost you both time and money.  Perhaps a lot of it.

You don't actually want an email account that allows you access with an insecure protocol.

One less known attack vector is a good thing, not a bad thing.  The other problem is you have been orphaned by Microsoft.  There are no more security updates for Windows 7.  This happens on Mac frequently, so they decided to follow suit.  They are BOTH in the business of selling software and services.

Want something else?  Linux is free.  Then your base OS will also be up to date.  Can you actually run old office on Linux?  If you have to it's possible with a Windows emulator like PlayOnLinux, or convert your existing machine, into a virtual machine or create another Windows 7 box with Virtualbox (also free).  https://itsfoss.com/use-microsoft-office-linux/

@flatlander3 Actually, I feel orphaned by Xfinity.  Outlook works perfectly one day, and is disabled the next.  I don't like the xfinity mail site, especially after 15+ years with various editions of Outlook.  I'd be more than willing to buy a more recent version (I'm using 2016) if I thought Xfinity would allow it.

Your second paragraph was like reading hieroglyphics, but thanks for the attempt.

Folks, newer versions of Outlook (and Windows) will work, provided they support TLSv1.2.  Windows 7 has questionable support for TLSv1.2.  They say there's a patch, but I haven't personally tested this for efficacy.  We're not trying to abandon users, we're trying to ensure that we're offering encryption that is secure.  TLSv1 and TLSv1.1 are no longer deemed secure (xfinity.com/tls).  I understand this can be frustrating.  TLSv1.2 was released in 2008.  Most systems properly supported TLSv1.2 by 2014 or so.  If you're using a system older than that (which means they're unsupported by the vendor), there are likely a fair number of other security issues that those systems could be exposed to.
