Apple mail unable to access Comast email
All my apple devices no longer communicate with Comcast email. I can access my Comcast email via internet on Safari but not using the Apple mail app. Have been using apple mail to access Comcast email for decades.(Diamond)
Tried to use chat to work through this but don't have the patience with restricted options. Also noticed that a phone # for support is very illusive. The AI popup said something about Comcast email's future might be yahoo????
I have deleted Apple mail on my iPhone 16pro and then adding account back in, I get a "the user name or password for mail.comcast.net is incorrect". Also tried to switch mail settings over to imap instead of pop which got me a "Comcast is currently unavailable". When resetting up apple mail on my MacBook Air, a message "unable to verify account name or password.
Any suggestions out there?

Hello, @user_ypfo6u. It is incredibly frustrating when a setup that has worked for decades suddenly stops communicating, especially when you are being met with "incorrect password" errors despite knowing your credentials are correct. The "Comcast moving to Yahoo" rumor you saw is likely a misunderstanding of a different industry shift; we are not becoming Yahoo Mail. However, we have significantly tightened our security protocols recently, which is the most likely reason why your Apple devices are being locked out. Here is the step-by-step process to get your iPhone and MacBook back in sync.
1. Enable "Third-Party Access" (The Most Likely Fix)
We recently disabled access for third-party apps (like Apple Mail) by default for many users to encourage the use of our own website or app. If this setting is toggled off, Apple Mail will return a "password incorrect" error even if the password is right.
- Go to Xfinity.com and sign in via Safari.
- Click the Account icon (the person silhouette) and go to Account Management.
- Navigate to Users and select your specific username.
- Look for Security or Email Settings.
- Find the checkbox labeled "Allow access to my WiFi/email through third-party programs" and ensure it is checked.
2. Move from POP to IMAP
You mentioned trying to switch to IMAP, which is the correct move. POP is an outdated protocol that "tugs" mail down to one device, whereas IMAP keeps everything synced across your iPhone and Mac.
When re-adding the account, use these specific settings if the "Automatic" setup fails:
Incoming Mail Server (IMAP):
Host Name: imap.comcast.net
Port: 993
SSL: On
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
Host Name: smtp.comcast.net
Port: 587 (Try 465 if 587 fails)
SSL: On
3. Clear the "Keychain" on your MacBook
Sometimes your Mac holds onto an old, "corrupt" version of your password in its memory, which prevents the new setup from verifying.
- On your MacBook, open Keychain Access (Search for it via Command + Space).
- Search for comcast.net or smtp.comcast.net.
- Delete those entries.
- Restart the Apple Mail app and try adding the account again.
Please let us know if any of the above steps help! Our team remains here to support you however we can :)
