I received this email as well and realized right away it is a scam.  No creditor can "automatically" charge your account unless you allow them.  Part of this scam is calling the phone number in the email.  Current scams now provide phone number and if you call it, follow their instructions you are authorizing the charge without knowing it.  Banks are now refusing to reimbursing consumers for this fraudulent transaction because you "authorized it".  I work in the financial world and a lot of this fraud is going on and people are losing a lot of money.

This scam has a new twist....by calling the phone number in the email, they will attempt to get your banking account number, and you will be asked to "press this and press that".  By doing that, you are unknowingly authorizing the fee to be processed and deposited straight into the fraudster's account.  Since you actually pushed the button to authorize (although you didn't realize you did) some banks are refusing to reimburse consumers because they fell for it and didn't do anything to protect their account information.  I work in the banking industry and the stories of lost funds are sad.  Always remember NO creditor can automatically charge your account unless you provide your account number and authorize it.

I received a call purporting to be from Xfinity, but with local number and not identified as Xfinity on Caller ID.  South Asian accent.   He had my Xfinity bill amount and last four digits of the account.  He offered to discount my bill by $50 for two years.  Catch?  I have to give him my bank details so that he can charge the discounted amount.   I refused.  Question.  How did he have my bill and account details (only the last 4 digits)? Was there a data breach at Xfinity that we are not aware.  He also had my name and address etc. (which is easy enough to get).

There is a very sophisticated scam that Xfinity customers need to be aware of.

A message is left on the victims phone to call an 800# for 50% off on their Xfinity bill. When calling the number the woman's recorded voice says, "Thank you for calling Xfinity. All calls are recorded for training purposes. We will be with you shortly". When placed on hold the music starts too. All the time mimicking Xfinity calls.

When one of the scammers rep comes on line to explain the promotional deal. The scammer explains that Xfinity and Target have signed a contract to promote Target Gift Cards and the promotional deal is to have the Xfinity service be 50% off for 24 months.  To obtain this deal the victim is to pay, in my case, 10 months of the bill which is 50% of the Xfinity bill. The scammer goes on to explain that if the payment is done in the next 2 hours that they will send a $50 VISA debit card.

The saga goes on.

Here are the numbers the scammers use;

[Edited: "Personal Information"] – First call came in from this #

[Edited: "Personal Information"]

NOTE: When calling the 888, 800, 833 # off hours the woman’s recorded voice says “Thank you for calling Xfinity. Our office is closed. Our business hours are from 8am-5pm Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Friday. Thank you and have a great day.” When calling the 855 # off hours the woman’s recorded voice says “I’m sorry, our office is currently closed. Please call back during normal business hours of Monday through Friday 8am-5pm Pacific Standard Time.”

These scammers are very sophisticated.

Xfinity IS NOT protecting their customers from scammers.

Scammers change the scam all the time.  Early on it was eBay and various other pre-paid cards.  People started reporting it a lot around the internet and then the scammers moved on to something else.  It's really hard for Comcast to stop them.  Unfortunately there are gullible people out there and they fall for things like this.  It's mostly seniors who are looking for a way to lower their bills.  The only real thing we can do is to tell people how to avoid scams and what to look for.

@user_ff5379 I received a call from [Edited: "Personal Information"], a voice recording stating I can save 50%, and they are open 8-5 pacific standard time.  When I called back, I was transferred to Jake [Edited: "Personal Information"], who explained the promotion (Target and Xfinity working together), and he credited my account $115.00.  I went into xfinity.payments.com and saw the credit and then received a text message confirming the same thing.  I then decided to call the regular Customer Service line.  He stated he worked with promotions too and there was no promotion with Xfinity and Target of which he was aware.  I then called back the 833 number and the gentleman explained that there are three groups; his group promotions and sales was separate and distinct from customer service.  I stated it doesn't make sense that the two groups are not on the same page, both groups should know about the promotions in general.  This situation is alarming as the information comes from Xfinity (credit), is reflected on the account, and the regular Customer Service number saw the credit as pending.  The regular Comcast rep said to wait 7-10 days to see if the actual credit goes through; if so, it is then possibly legitimate.  I plan to do that step as I went in to do reverse number look ups and that didn't help.

@user_13151315

Good afternoon,

please report this to our Customer Security Assurance team who can be reached at 888-565-4329. What you're describing is a very common scam to gain trust with you, the victim, to then have you purchase pre-paid cards from Target where they promise to offer discounts because you are using pre-paid cards from Target with a special promotion to pay for your bill where they then collect the card information from you and "taking the payment" for these discounted services. Actuality is that you are paying a scammer and they are not paying your bill for you. It is not uncommon for them to show a "sign of faith" by making "credit" payments on your account via automated systems using fraudulent and/or stolen credit cards . If you haven't changed your password recently for your account, I recommend doing so and closely monitoring your bill for any charge reversals(usually whoever had their credit card stolen eventually finds out and lets their bank know, who will then reverse all the payments made). To note, the $115 is not a credit, its a one time payment. The number I mentioned is to our security team who would be able to put payment restrictions in place to prevent further fraudulent "credits" from being made to your account.

Got a voicemail from [Edited: "Personal Information"] stating my Comcast account is eligible for 50 percent off. I was to call [Edited: "Personal Information"] to get discount. I called. Spoke to a woman (not from around here) who explained that it is promotion for 24 months. No contract. Bill would be 69.99 monthly.
Here is catch: I would go purchase an AmEx card at grocery for $350. Then call [Edited: "Personal Information"] to give them the AmEx details. This pays the bill for 5 months. After 5 months I would be billed $69.99 monthly for remaining 19 months.
Sounded sketchy. Turns out, it is a scam. Wanted to share all details. Good luck.

@user_ff7d85

Have you gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill?  If so, the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to h ttps://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

thank you for this info. I received this call today and they actually had my monthly bill amount down to the penny. How would they have that? Was Comcast hacked? I knew it was a scam when the rep mentioned paying with a Target gift card.

So my question is- they had my cell phone number (which is linked to my account) and my monthly billing amount. How could they possibly have this info?

@user_1dc282 That happened to me, and the scammer reversed the payment and I was charged a returned check fee.  I had to make the payment, in addition to being out $750 for the scam!
