Trade-in rejection

We sent my husbands phone to assurant to get the value of his phone applied to our monthly bills as a credit. Now in the status it says our trade in was rejected for serial number mismatch. This makes no sense… and we are really frustrated because it does make a big difference on our monthly bills. so what are we supposed to do now???
