Motorola Edge (2025) won't use a different ringtone

Hello,

I'm cross-posting this from the Motorola forums just in case this bug is specific to the Xfinity bootloader, for example 🤷‍♂️

My Motorola Edge (2025) that I bought from XFinity won't use any ringtone (built-in or custom) other than the default Moto.ogg when an actual phone call comes in.

I can set a new ringtone just fine in the settings under Sound and Vibration, and everything (other than an actual phone call) that can trigger the ringtone (like the preview that plays when you adjust the ringer volume) will play that new ringtone just fine. But again, an actual phone call still triggers the factory default "Moto" ringtone. This behavior persists across restarts and resets. I have cleared the storage and cache for the Phone app and Contacts app, and the behavior still persists. It doesn't matter if I try another built-in ringtone or a downloaded mp3. Always the same result.

Unfortunately, the Moto ringtone is unbearable 😂, otherwise I wouldn't have a real problem with any of this.

I can set Contact Ringtones, and everything including actual phone calls will use those new ringtones just fine. That being said, I will not be going and setting a custom Contact Ringtone for every single one of my contacts 😂

Side note: Custom notifications, alarm sounds, etc. all work perfectly. It's just the global ringtone that won't work.

I have everything up to date to my knowledge.
Software Version: V2VD35.63-85-1
Phone by Google version: 202.0.838486605

I've already done all the other common troubleshooting steps for this:

  • I'm running just one eSIM from Xfinity
  • The default apps are all set up correctly (Phone and Caller ID)
  • The sound files are in the correct ringtones directory
  • I already tried resetting app preferences
  • I've tried changing the ringtone from the phone app directly (it just redirects to the system settings)
  • Same behavior in Safe Mode

Is this a known issue, and are there steps to fix this yet? I'm tempted to just root my phone and rename my preferred ringtone to Moto.ogg otherwise.

Thank you in advance.

Hey there, @H_Ethan. I am not seeing anything in our internal documentation about Xfinity Mobile service affecting device's abilities to change its ringtone. I see when a Google search with mention of that issue pops up with Xfinity in parentheses potentially being the cause but I am not seeing anything in our support documents that state we have any effect on that device feature.

@user_gk97hj call Xfinity and tell them the issue and demand that you get a better phone. I suggest a Samsung. They are not worried about dealing with this issue as they were more than happy to put me on a Samsung instead. Even stated that they have not heard of this issue even though it is everywhere on the web. Maybe it is a marketing technique to get you on a more expensive phone so they deal with it, all I know is they told me they haven't heard it before and that they were going to send it to their "technical support" to take that phone off of their selection... I doubt they actually do it. Maybe a marketing ploy to get you to get something better?

I have the same issue. No matter what you set the phone ringtone to it only does the annoyingly, obnoxious hello moto ringtone

I have a new Moto G 2026 purchased from Xfinity, and it has the same problem. None of the suggestions have helped, or apply to my phone.

Remove your eaim, install new one using xfinity app. Fixes the missing esim ringtone option

Same issue here, Didn't know I was buying an issue. May have to take it back and reinstate my old phone.

I have a friend who just got a "Moto G 2026" phone from Xfinity. He has installed no additional apps, so there are no ringtone apps on his phone. Using his "Settings", we set his ringtone to "Simple" and the "Simple" ringtone seems to play properly when it plays the preview. But when we call the phone, it instead plays the obnoxious "Moto" ringtone. This is on a brand-new phone that updated its system software as of yesterday morning (3/28/26). I walked through all the silly recommendations that one typically finds online for these sorts of problems, and none of them worked. This is obviously a BUG, and it seems to be a long-term bug that Motorola has not fixed for quite some time; I see reports online of another Motorola device ("Motorola Edge") that also does this same thing. It's apparently not restricted to Xfinity-supplied phones, because people are reporting this problem in other forums with Motorola devices that are using other carriers.
