Motorola Edge (2025) won't use a different ringtone

Hello,

I'm cross-posting this from the Motorola forums just in case this bug is specific to the Xfinity bootloader, for example 🤷‍♂️

My Motorola Edge (2025) that I bought from XFinity won't use any ringtone (built-in or custom) other than the default Moto.ogg when an actual phone call comes in.

I can set a new ringtone just fine in the settings under Sound and Vibration, and everything (other than an actual phone call) that can trigger the ringtone (like the preview that plays when you adjust the ringer volume) will play that new ringtone just fine. But again, an actual phone call still triggers the factory default "Moto" ringtone. This behavior persists across restarts and resets. I have cleared the storage and cache for the Phone app and Contacts app, and the behavior still persists. It doesn't matter if I try another built-in ringtone or a downloaded mp3. Always the same result.

Unfortunately, the Moto ringtone is unbearable 😂, otherwise I wouldn't have a real problem with any of this.

I can set Contact Ringtones, and everything including actual phone calls will use those new ringtones just fine. That being said, I will not be going and setting a custom Contact Ringtone for every single one of my contacts 😂

Side note: Custom notifications, alarm sounds, etc. all work perfectly. It's just the global ringtone that won't work.

I have everything up to date to my knowledge.
Software Version: V2VD35.63-85-1
Phone by Google version: 202.0.838486605

I've already done all the other common troubleshooting steps for this:

  • I'm running just one eSIM from Xfinity
  • The default apps are all set up correctly (Phone and Caller ID)
  • The sound files are in the correct ringtones directory
  • I already tried resetting app preferences
  • I've tried changing the ringtone from the phone app directly (it just redirects to the system settings)
  • Same behavior in Safe Mode

Is this a known issue, and are there steps to fix this yet? I'm tempted to just root my phone and rename my preferred ringtone to Moto.ogg otherwise.

Thank you in advance.

Hey there, @H_Ethan. I am not seeing anything in our internal documentation about Xfinity Mobile service affecting device's abilities to change its ringtone. I see when a Google search with mention of that issue pops up with Xfinity in parentheses potentially being the cause but I am not seeing anything in our support documents that state we have any effect on that device feature.

I have the same issue. No matter what you set the phone ringtone to it only does the annoyingly, obnoxious hello moto ringtone

@Erus Oof. Over on the Motorola forum, an agent gave me steps to reinstall the firmware on the phone. I'll post a link to that in a minute

Nope! Didn't work.

I successfully installed the newer software version, and the ringtone problem persists. Very fun. I guess I'll just mute the ringtone smh

Bummer! Everything else about this phone is pretty nice

@H_Ethan Thanks for getting back to us. I am not finding any information about known issues on our side. I'm wondering if this is a device settings issue.  I believe a factory reset is an option and to try setting up your ringtones again. Before we go that route have you tried chatting or calking Motorola directly? I would like to see what options we have to help. Can you please direct message me your first and last name along with your full service address so that I can assist?
Here's the detailed steps to direct message us:
• Click "Sign In" if necessary
• Click the "Direct Message” icon (upper right corner of this page)
• Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
• Type "Xfinity Support" in the to line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list
• Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
• Press Enter to send your message.

@Erus - It is incredibly frustrating when you’ve spent time picking a ringtone you actually like, only to have that "Hello Moto" chime override it every single time. This is a known quirk with Motorola devices, usually caused by a conflict between the system settings and the pre-installed "Moto" app. Here is a step-by-step guide to reclaiming your ringtone:

1. Check the "Moto" App Settings
Motorola phones often have a dedicated Moto app that can override system-wide sounds for "priority" or "smart" alerts.

- Open the Moto app.

- Look for Moto Display or Attentive Display.

- Check if there are any "Adaptive" sound settings or "Do Not Disturb" rules within this app that might be defaulting to the factory sound.

2. Clear Cache for the Media Storage
Sometimes the Android system gets "stuck" on the default file path for ringtones.

- Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps.

- Tap the three dots in the top right and select Show system.

- Find Media Storage.

- Tap Storage & Cache and select Clear Cache.

- Restart your phone and try re-assigning your custom ringtone.

3. The "Zedge" or Third-Party App Conflict
If you are using an app like Zedge to set your ringtone, the Xfinity/Moto firmware sometimes blocks the app's permission to write system settings.

- The Fix: Download the ringtone file directly to your phone's Internal Storage > Ringtones folder.

- Then, go to Settings > Sound > Phone Ringtone and select it from the "On this device" list rather than through the third-party app.

4. Contact-Specific Overrides
In rare cases, if you are testing the ringtone by calling from a specific number, check that contact's individual settings.

- Open the Contacts app.

- Select the contact you're calling from.

- Tap the three dots > Set ringtone.

- Ensure it isn't manually set to the default "Hello Moto" there.

A quick tip: If you just updated your software recently, Moto phones sometimes reset "App Permissions." Ensure your Settings > Apps > Special App Access > Modify System Settings allows the Media/Settings app to make changes. And please let me know if this helps!
