juggling phones on my account

We hand down our older phones to our kids when my wife upgrades. She recently upgraded but now my son's phone died. Can I use the upgrade feature open under his portion of the account to get a new one and use it for my wife and then hand her current one down to him or do I have to use the new phone under his number?
