"Your phone number has been removed" email

Last night, I received the following email from [Edited: "Possible malicious number"].

Please provide a new phone number

The phone number ending in [redacted] previously associated with your account ending in [redacted] has been removed from your account settings. This could happen if it was added to a different Xfinity ID, reassigned to another individual, or disconnected.

Update your phone number using the sign in option below. Please note that you will need to sign in using your Xfinity ID and password as your prior phone number will no longer work as a username substitute. Adding a verified number ensures that we can contact you with any important communication regarding your services and makes proving your identity easier down the road.

I first checked the Xfinity app to make sure the number was still on my account, which it was, and the phone number worked just fine.

I then called Xfinity customer service and they could not explain why I received this email. They tried to say that the email was not one of their legitimate ones, but I have received several other different emails from the exact same address, including confirmation emails when I have made updates in the Xfinity app, so I know that it's from them. I asked to speak to a supervisor who eventually confirmed that the email was legitimate, but they had no record of sending that email to me. She then wanted to transfer me back to the mobile department if I wanted to look into it further, but by then I had already wasted an hour of my time (most of it on hold) and said, "No, thank you."

Upon further research on this forum as well as Reddit, I have discovered that several other people have received this email accidentally and were told by Xfinity to just ignore it. This does not seem like phishing to me; rather it seems like a system glitch that Xfinity has no interest in fixing. This is extremely concerning because an email like this can induce panic. No one wants to choose between risking losing their number or clicking on links in an email that has incorrect information, but comes from a seemingly legitimate source. And no one wants to waste an hour on the phone with customer service either.

Xfinity must look into resolving this issue immediately or risk losing their customers.

... I have received several other different emails from the exact same address ...

Be aware that scammers can fake their "From" addresses, so such addresses cannot be trusted. At best, it's a "maybe".

If you can, check any email that claims to be from Comcast/Xfinity with their Connect webmail (https://connect.xfinity.com/) and look for the XFINITY Verified Email logo. See https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/comcast-verified-email for examples of valid logo placement. A logo in the body of the email does not count.

Unfortunately, AFAIK the logo is not present when you view one of their messages in an email app or program. It's only visible when you use their web email site, and only for email sent to a Comcast.net address.
