Xfinity Target Promotion Scam

I encountered a sophisticated scam where individuals impersonating Xfinity representatives contacted me. Alarmingly, they bypassed standard two-factor authentication and instead verbally confirmed my identity using readily available personal information, including my address, phone number, Xfinity account number, and current account balance. They also possessed details about specific promotions on my account, including the discount amount and expiration date. The scammers attempted to lure me into a fraudulent scheme involving a purported partnership between Xfinity and Target, offering a 50% discount on internet service if I prepaid for a year using a Target gift card. When I declined, they followed up the next day with threats of account penalties.

Unfortunately, after communicating with the scammers, I did receive a text from official 615-91 (Xfinity), which asks me to provide feedback from 0 to 10. Does it mean scammers have access to Xfinity systems?

I got call from [Edited: "Possible Scam Phone Number"] about the same promotion. They were giving me 50% off for 5 years of Xfinity service and I was supposed to use my target credit card or target prepaid gift cards.

The same thing happened to me and I was scammed out of $1,200. I cannot dispute the charges because I purchased the gift cards and provided the gift card numbers so I am [Edited: "Language"]

Just received this call/scam attempt yesterday, scary thing is they offered to clear my balance for the deal, I logged into my account not sharing any info and watched the balance disappear, they spoke to my exact balance on my account as well. All communication (text) came through the same number that Xfinity has communicated regarding prior purchases. It seems as though they are deeply entrenched into your system and have access they should not.

@user_khxh0v

to add to my previous post, I was just informed they used my own bank account (bank number used to set up automatic payments through comcast in the past) to clear my balance and claimed it was free. My concern-how would they have access to use my billing information that was set up through Xfinity? No billing info shared by me. Was their a breach with your billing system?

@user_khxh0v Why is this happening?! Xfinity has a legal obligation to clean up their system and remove these hackers. Why is this STILL going on? Their canned response here basically points fault at their customers. Something needs to be done!

Yes, these guys are still active (5/7/25). Had a similar interaction, the call started out with a Comcast sounding auto-attendant. The first guy I talked with had all of the same info about me, very concerning they knew my promo that is expiring and how much my current bill is. After he told me they'd cut my current bill of $75 to $35 for 3 years when I paid one year up front - $410 - (my radar was up, I wasn't born yesterday), I told him I needed to see more details, send me an email with promo info, etc. to review. He said after he cleared my account, he'd send me an invoice that showed the details, with an activation code to exercise the offer.  He was off the phone for a bit, told me to check my account on-line to see he'd cleared my upcoming payment due, which he had using a checking account. He told me the last 4 digits of the account (not any of my checking accounts), which now shows on my payment screen and a balance due of $0,

He told me an invoice was being sent to me and transferred me to another guy who said he was a Manager in Billing to walk me through how to get the offer. When I told him I hadn't seen the promo info I'd asked for, he said it had been sent, check my SPAM. BIG RED FLAG. It was there, from "Xfinity" but didn't have an Xfinity.com/.net address or the big red XF "Verified Email" logo on it. ANOTHER RED FLAG. I pushed him on this and he started getting rude, kept telling me to open it. I only previewed it, looked legit, had Xfinity purple on it and everything, but in the details, that's where the info to pay with Target gifts cards came out. EVEN BIGGER RED FLAG! I told him I wouldn't be doing anything, he got even more belligerent , told me again to go to Target and either get 2 gift cards or apply for a Target credit card to pay for it, that Target was subsidizing the promotion. I told him to remove the payment they had made on the account and return my subscription to normal. He said that by refusing the offer I was cancelling my service, it would be immediately shut off for at least 7 days while it processed and I would be charged a cancellation fee. I told him I was not cancelling my service, he was, and that if anything happened, I would immediately contact the Colorado Attorney General for action. He proceeded to belittle me, called me every name in the book, etc. He then hung up, after I didn't take the bait.

If anyone at Xfinity wants the "invoice" I was sent, I can provide it, let me know. I'm watching all of my accounts (Xfinity, bank, credit card) to see what, if anything, happens from here. FWIW, both of the guys had accents, sounded like the Philipines, India or something, like many of Comcast's Customer Service agents do. Again, it's very disturbing the info they had about me, my account, and how they "made a payment" on my account. There's a big hole somewhere.....

Yep, this same scam happened to me yesterday.  It was the Target gift card that tipped us off...but otherwise, very convincing.  They even sent me a text message saying they zero'd out my balance for this month and the total amount was the exact amount I have due this month.  It's true, they have access to our account information.  Scary stuff...and it's only going to get harder to detect these types of scams as they are getting so clever.  Everyone...Stay on your toes.  Double check phone numbers etc.

Thanks.  It is still an active scam.  It is very scary what the scam artists know and it would indicate that they have access to my data at XFINITY.  Thankfully, I did not get the Target gift certificates.

Hi. I received this Scam call last night also and they wanted me to immediately go to Target and send them the card info. The amazing this is that they were able to DISCOUNT/CHANGE my Xfinity Balance on my Xfinity App to $0 balance which means they definitely have access to Xfinity info Realtime and somehow in their systems. Scary!

We got the same call today.  It started with a call indicating that our "half off monthly bill was expiring", then called Xfinity and had this agent online directing us to get two Target gift cards equalling $300 each and call Xfinity with promotion code to pay $600 bill up front.  Paying the bill with Taget cards will give discount for next three years.  It sounded very official, but paying a bill with a Target card is what led us to so some research first.  They also said if we paid the bill in two hours, we'd get a $200 gift card from Xfinity.  Yikes.

I received the same scam today.

It seems there would have been an email and multiple notifications to users about this scam.

I was susceptible since my discount ends in about one month, and would have been logical to cut a new deal before the discount expires.

At least I could hope.

If you have gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to:     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
The FTC also has a great webpage on Scams.  Please check it out as well.
For Target Gift Cards:
Call 1 (800) 544-2943 and follow Target’s instructions.
Keep a copy of the Target gift card or your store receipt.
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

URGENT UPDATE TO MY POST from 5/7/25 -

I have been monitoring my account since my interaction with these people on 5/7/25, no payment changes were ever noted. Today, I got my June statement (due July) and it now shows a payment reversal (for the one they made) eff 5/15/25 and a past due amount for my June payment, which shouldn't have happened as my auto-payment should have happened on 6/1. Xfinity is also trying to charge me $20 for an Echeck/eft Return Fee and a $10 late fee for my June payment.  I am addressing this with Billing.

IF YOU GOT TO THE POINT OF THEM MAKING A PAYMENT on your account, check your upcoming bill for unexpected additional charges.  Talk about a cluster.....

@XfinityShawn  - I will be calling them tomorrow to resolve this. If you can help or have a direct number for someone in Billing to clear this up, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise all I have is going into the black hole of the Main Xfinity Support line - 800-xfinity/934-6489. Appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks-
