Re Xfinity scams the elderly
Aug 7, I called because I had no service for a month. I then texted. After 30 minutes without a response, I drove to Williamsport (26 miles). Agent arranged for a technician to come Aug 11. I asked her if she could reduce my bill. She said I could return the box for my second TV and download Xfinity Streaming. I did this. Then I got email from Xfinity that I had used almost all my data.
Aug 11, Technician determined that Xfinity had disconnected service by mistake. He got Customer Service on the line for me. I talked to them on the speaker phone while he was standing there. I explained that I could not afford to pay a lot for data. She said I qualified for a new phone, and I would not have to pay for data. She said shipping would cost $12.00 or I could pick it up in Williamsport. I elected to pick it up in Williamsport. I then received an email that the phone was being shipped and I was charged $12.00. Since it is next to impossible to get through to “Customer Service” I let it go.
Aug 18, Took phone to Xfinity in Williamsport (52 miles round trip). I was told that if I used the new phone to stream, it would cost me a lot for data. I asked her why I was not told that when I was advised to get the new phone to use for streaming. She said, “We do not tell people that because we expect them to know it.” How many 83-year-olds do you think would know that?
On Aug 18, I called for a label to return my new phone. She kept me on the line forever trying to sell me something. I don’t even know half of what she was saying. She had a foreign accent. I kept telling her, “I just need a label.” She was persistent about selling me something until she gave me a headache.
I wonder how many other gullible, low-tech elderly, under false promises, have been duped into buying something they did not need.
All this stress triggered A Fib. I am scheduling a Cardioversion to get my heart back in rhythm.
