xfinity NOW internet and refurbished XB3 modem

I was thinking of switching to xfinity now internet and I noticed you get a used XB3 gateway and you HAVE TO use it.  Now looking at this online I noticed one guy called it a "roach motel",  are these gateways checked by opening them up to see if they are infested with roaches or other bugs?

Scratches are one thing.  But bugs...no that's a deal breaker!

Concern moved here to the Customer Service help section for greater exposure to Comcast corporate employees (The Digital Care Team) for assistance.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out to us here on our Community Forum. We are unaware of this scenario you provided. If the modem is exhibiting noise or running unusually warm, it is not a problem to replace it. You also have the option to use your modem if you decide that it is a better fit for your in-home network.

That is true, any modem that has been refurbished would have been checked before it was sent out. I have never run into any situation with those having any infestations.

Here's a typical NOW Internet problem. I had my NOW Internet set up and activated on the day that I got it. Had it in bridge mode, using my router. Next morning, no internet connection. Bad feeling, started testing, and found that the XB3 was connected (online) but no internet. So I restarted the XB3 and again, connection but no internet. Did a modem restart via the Xfinity app, and got internet back. Connected the XB3 to my router, XB3 lost it's internet connection. Finally did a factory reset, and the reset XB3 would not recognize "password" as it's password. So another factory reset, and that one I actually got logged in, but it didn't recognize "password" as the current password in the initial forced password change. Which was odd, since I'd just logged in using "password". Okay, third factory reset, the XB3 has internet but I can't log into it to put it in bridge mode.

So I obviously need a replacement XB3. Went to the NOW Portal (Xfinity assistant), and there was no path that I could find there that ended up my being able to request a replacement XB3. It looked to the assistant like everything was working, and, of course none of the troubleshooting includes the fact that the thing has intermittent internet connection problems, or that, even if it did work right, that I can't log in to put the XB3 in bridge mode.

So I've about given up wasting time on NOW Internet...it looks like it's designed to work the first time around. If it doesn't work when you initially set it up, heaven help you. Xfinity apparently can't.

Hello @RogerSC We appreciate you posting about your experience so far. While we are limited on what we can do with the prepaid NOW accounts and most of the help is through the NOW Portal that you mentioned I wanted to hopefully clarify a few things. With NOW you cannot manage the modem settings including bridge mode or connect personal equipment to it. The Wifi network is also defaulted to the network and password listed on the modem. For more information on our NOW Internet you can visit: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/now-internet-faqs
