Xfinity asking for SSN over Chat

I had a chat to discuss sending out a technician, and it turned into a FREE "no strings attached" iPad offer, so I accepted and then got sent a link asking for my Birthdate and SSN. It seems extremely fishy. I cannot think for any reason why they would need my SSN. I am already an internet customer, I was told I did not need to sign up for Xfinity Mobile to receive this promotion, and there should be no associated credit check.

If this is not a scam, then Xfinity should be upfront about the information they will be requiring and give a reason as to why they would need it.

user_oaxc2t We appreciate you taking the time to contact us about this experience. iPad and other tablets, along with smartwatches would be an addition to an existing Xfinity Mobile line. Please see more details here: https://www.xfinity.com/learn/mobile-service

We also have our CSA Customer Security Assurance Team as well if you feel this was not a legitimate conversation and report at https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/report-abuse

I am not a current Xfinity Mobile customer; I was told I would not have to sign up for Mobile Service and having that service should still not require an SSN.

The CSA team link does not seem to load, nor the security link in the original comment.

The employees, yet again, posted a CSA link which is only accessible to employees, not to customers. Try https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/report-abuse instead. If you get a "Bad Request" message on that link, try opening it in a a different browser or in a Private/InPrivate/Incognito window.

Thanks Bruce, I have emailed their security team. I imagine it was real, but in general just seems incredibly scammy to offer something for free in exchange for personal not related to said item at all.

I think you are right to be wary. There have been many Forum posts by customers who were misled into signing up for Mobile. Keep a close eye on them! They're slippery!
