why is this - Received wrong phone scam call from [Edited] - still going on?

this has been going on since at least 2024 (search on the forum post with that title).   I did the same - tried to upgrade my iphone with xfinity over xfinity.com logged in chat, get a new phone delivered today (it was less than 24 hours from the upgrade chat).  phone shows up via fed ex, i leave the exterior box sealed.   I get a call from [Edited: "Invalid Phone Number"] stating the phone that i received was not new, it was refurb, and i need to send it, via fed ex, to them,they will give me the address when i'm at fed ex and for my troubles, they will send me money and a discount for a new phone.  I chat xfinity, again, on their site, and now they are telling me that number is a valid xfinity number and everything is fine.   except i either have a refurb phone or not, and xfinity chat support either knows what they are talking about or not

the call for the upgrade was less than 24 hours ago. How did the scammers,if there are scammers, get my info?  on the paper receipt,in the sealed box, it said to call a number, because of this scam, so Xfinity knows about it, and has for 2 years, at least.  how is this still going on?
